  • Rivendell

    9 Ekim 2016, Yeni Zelanda ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Finally made it to Rivendell! I wish I had more time to explore the park that it's in, Kaitoke. The whole area is gorgeous. The set itself is pretty small and there's also nothing left of it. That arch was put in later to commemorate the movies and is much smaller than the original that was built. The little map they had on the sign was neat. It showed exactly where all the buildings were built and where you should stand and look to see where they filmed which scenes. The tree with the funky roots is actually where they took the promo pictures of Legolas (https://goo.gl/3cHgoE) and the river took me forever to realize what it was since all the sign said was "Fords of Isen filmed here." In the second movie it's where that horse finds Aragorn after he falls off the cliff during the fight with the orcs and wargs. Anyway, that's my nerd excitement for the day :)Okumaya devam et

  • Pelorus Bridge

    10 Ekim 2016, Yeni Zelanda ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Nice little stop off on the way to Nelson. Also a good picture of a silver fern which is the national symbol of NZ. It plays heavily in Maori traditions and is used in a number of ways across the country, from their rugby team, the All Blacks, to Air New Zealand's logo.Okumaya devam et

  • Abel Tasman

    11 Ekim 2016, Yeni Zelanda ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Wasn't quite sure what a "Cruise and Walk" was going to involve. Turns out it's a boat trip up the coast and, in my case, a drop off on the beach and 9.6 km up and down mountains back to another beach for a pick up. I won't lie, there were a lot of self pep talks involved along the way. And seals!
I'm enormously proud of my terribly out of shape self. And enormously sore.

  • Franz Josef Glacier

    12 Ekim 2016, Yeni Zelanda ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

There's a man in the first picture for scale, although the rock pile he's on cuts half the view off. The glacier used to fill the entire valley. The rocks as far out as where I'm standing in the second photo (and farther) have scrape marks all over them from the ice.Okumaya devam et

  • Lake Wanaka

    13 Ekim 2016, Yeni Zelanda ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

We raced down the coastline ahead of a storm hoping for a good photo op, but still ended up with only a half-clear view.
Fun fact: If you Google New Zealand, that "lone tree on the lake" picture you're guaranteed to see was taken here.Okumaya devam et

  • Lake Hawea

    13 Ekim 2016, Yeni Zelanda ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Lake Wanaka's next-door neighbor. I had heard of Wanaka long before coming to New Zealand but never of Hawea. A sad failing on the part of the tourism industry in my opinion.

  • Queenstown

    14 Ekim 2016, Yeni Zelanda ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

A fun Lord of the Rings-themed trek around the Queenstown area with some bonus knowledge gained about the area's gold rush in the 1800s. The 4th photo is of Skipper's Canyon, which the miners had to hike over the mountains to reach. A road to the settlement was so difficult to carve out of the mountainside that it took 7 years to complete.
Oh, and our guide, Jonty, very nonchalantly told us right at the end about which Uruk he played in LOTR. Apparently it's no big deal...

  • The Chasm

    15 Ekim 2016, Yeni Zelanda ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

The photos don't do it justice. I can also finally attest to all the stories about wild keas being rambunctious little troublemakers. I returned to the parking lot to find this guy tearing up rubber parts on the underside of my car. I had to half crawl under the car to shoo him away, much to the amusement of the busload of tourists taking pictures. He then skipped gleefully away across the parking lot with his characteristic "drunken sailor" gait, as it's described locally. Last I saw, he was harassing an old Indian woman trying to sell coffee out of her van.Okumaya devam et
