Washington

I guess I never realized how impressive Washington's mountains are...
Auckland

This is terrifying. Fingers crossed.
Waitakere Park

Checking out the Arataki Visitor Center w/ our guide Wayne "as in, John Wayne."
Ahuahu Falls

In the middle of a crater, this waterfall is fed entirely by rainfall and has never run dry even when there have been months and months without rain thanks to the volcanic rock soaking up the waterもっと詳しく
Piha Valley

Part of the same crater, everything is growing from the volcanic rock. The black sand beach is even made of ground-down volcanic rock. The impressive waves apparently cause the surf community here toもっと詳しく
Quest Auckland

Finally got to sleep in a bed, and Quest didn't disappoint. Ready to start Day 2.
FYI

On all these posts, even if they don't have pics, you can still click the title and see it on the map.
Sky Tower

I didn't really expect it to be that high until my ears popped in the elevator.
P.S. That pointy island in the harbor is a volcano. There are 53 volcanic craters in Auckland alone.
Sorry for theもっと詳しく
Road to Rotorua

Nice to know some things never change.
Waikato River

Not a bad spot for lunch.
P.S. none of the saturation was adjusted, everything is actually that shade of green.
"Road Narrows, Take Care"

Can't say I mind the narrowing. Although all of the forests in this part of the country look like a dinosaur could jump out at any moment (note the palm trees.)
Edit: I've since learned parts ofもっと詳しく
Te Puia

Kia Ora! Hello, welcome, long life to you; whichever translation you like!
Started the evening out by seeing our Hangi, our feast, cooked on hot rocks in a hole in the ground. Then we went through aもっと詳しく
Agrodome

Although this one wasn't at the top of my looking-forward-to list, it turned out to be pretty fun. The host was really funny and all the kids' excitement helped energize everyone else. I also boughtもっと詳しく
The Shire

Along with the only outside photo of the Green Dragon I was able to get.
Hobbiton & The Green Dragon

There are 44 hobbit holes in Hobbiton. After the first movie trilogy, the set was torn down and returned to pastureland but tourists still wanted to come see it so when Peter Jackson approached theもっと詳しく
Bag End

In the first trilogy, the tree atop Bag End was cut down elsewhere and framed up for the filming. In the Hobbit, Peter Jackson commissioned an entire fake tree complete with fake leaves. It's stillもっと詳しく
Redwoods of Rotorua

They filmed the new Pete's Dragon movie here (which was a very sweet movie, I recommend it.) I could have spent all day wandering through the trees, happy as can be.
Rainbow Springs

Visited a nice little nature park before leaving town. They had a number of native birds, fish, and lizards. The lizard picture is of a young Tuatara, which is the only surviving species of a lizardもっと詳しく
Huka Falls

Try not to fall in :/ Not a terribly vertical waterfall but the sheer volume of water boiling around in there was a bit nerve-wracking.
Mt Doom

Not hard to see why this was chosen as Mordor, although Mt Doom didn't deign to make an appearance :(
Middle Earth

Power lines aside, this definitely resembles more than a few scenes from LOTR.
"Scenic Overlook"

I had been wanting to stretch my legs and also get a photo of this weird purple and green vegetation covering every visible surface when this really abrupt Scenic Overlook sign popped up. Consideringもっと詳しく
Napier

Popped out of some gorgeous pine and green pasture covered mountains and landed on the beach!
Napier went through a horrible earthquake in the 30s and so when they rebuilt it they did the whole thingもっと詳しく
Deco City Motor Lodge

Favorite lodgings so far! (definitely getting in that tub tonight)
