• Tikal - Archeological site Day Two

    15 februari, Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

On our second day in Tikal, we started birding at the lagoon near the parking area where we found a group of Russet-naped Wood-Rails feeding on the lagoon. On a nearby tree we found a hard to spot Northern Potoo roosting, the plumage camouflaged perfectly with his tree stump.
A while later we got close views on a pair of spectacular Ocellated Turkeys preening.
While walking to the Tikal Q complex we found a mixed species flock with a lot of activity! A striking male Black-throated Shrike-Tanager gave us wonderful views for a long period of time while Woodcreepers, Flycatchers, Tanagers and a Rufous Piha fed nearby.

In the evening, we went birding on the road to Uaxactún, where we found some spectacular birds. Probably the most noticeable was a pair of Rufous-tailed Jacamar flying across the road and perching practically on the same branch!
Also, a Slaty-tailed Trogon was keen on having his picture taken and perched just above our heads.
