• Yaxhá Archeological site

    16 februari, Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

We left the wonders of Tikal and drove east to the archeological site of Yaxhá, a not so frequented site by tourists, so we would practically have the site to ourselves.
Of course, we made a few stops along the way to look for more birds!
A Wedge-tailed Sabrewing graced us by perching for a few moments and allowing us to get eyes on this handsome bird.
At the gate, we found a pair of very cooperative Green-backed Sparrows which had been avoiding us so far.
A pair of Black-crowned Tityra also showed up to greet us!

At the site, we wandered through the Mayan temples and made our way to temple 216 which has a wonderful view of the Yaxha lagoon.
After a while of scanning the horizon and tree tops, we got eyes on a group of vultures soaring up into the sky.
One, a lot bigger, was unmistakable. The King Vulture! Quite a distance away, but the call was out, everyone had eyes on this magnificent vulture. Everyone hoped it would get closer.
Suddenly, as if it heard our silent wishes, it started soaring our way!, practicaly at eye-level. Moments later, it soared low over the temple and flew off into the horizon! A sight that everyone will surely remember for a long time.

Just as we finished our descent of temple 216, a Ruddy Quail-Dove flushed in front of us and landed behind dark vegetation. Moments later we got wonderful views of this elusive dove which, usually, is only slightly seen when flushed.
