• Savanna Santa Ana - Puente San Andrés

    17 Februari, Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

After breakfast, we went to the savanna of Santa Ana in search of the local specialties. As soon as we arrived we got eyes on a magnificent male Vermilion Flycatcher, the incredibly bright red color contrasting with its dark back and mask was a sight to behold.
But, our main objective was an elusive Yucatan endemic, the Black Catbird! We started walking along the road with our ears tuned with the bird calls surrounding us, we soon heard a scolding call from the nearby shrubs. To our suprise, there it was! Perched out in the open! We quickly gave the call and moments later everyone had eyes on this tough to see bird.
We then tried for the Olive and Botteri's Sparrows on different locations of the savanna and got exellent views on both species.

In the evening, we went looking for waterbirds at the San Andrés bridge and surrounding marshes. As the sun started to set, we got excellent views of egrets and herons flying to their roosts.
Suddenly, a metallic sounding "ti-ti" was heard in front of us! An elusive Yellow-breasted Crake was calling and singing from the reads! We tried as best we could to get eyes on this small Crake but we did not get cooperation from said bird. After a while, we heard a familiar Ruddy Crake! With some work, we got eyes on a pair of these elusive Crakes.
As it got darker, an impressive amount of Lesser Nighthawks started to fly, dancing in their hunt for insects.
