  • Un pomeriggio in spiaggia

Busy at Poetto Beach... Like Bondi summer busy.

Poetto Beach stretches for eight kilometres along Cagliari's coastline, offering a sweeping expanse of fine white sand and clear Mediterranean waters. This urban beach, backed by historic buildings and beach clubs, serves as Cagliari's primary seaside destination. Popular with locals and visitors alike, the beach is known for its pink flamingos in the nearby salt pans, whilst its promenade bustles with joggers, cyclists and café-goers throughout the year.

  • Boating in Cagliari, Pt 1

We hired a little runabout from the Cagliari port and puttered around to Calamosca, The Sella del Diavolo and Poetto. The water is just stunning here. We anchored and swam off all three spots and sat and held our breath at Poetto as the Matildas kicked their way into the semis of the Women's World Football Cup being played in Sydney. What a morning!

  • Sardegna road trip, day 1 pt 1

Road trip. Headed south west out of Cagliari to Nora, stopped for a delicious lunch at Mirage in Chia (though I have to say, today was not the day to take a carb break, the pasta and risotto we saw coming out looked sensational) and then headed through the mountains to Porto Botto. From there we headed north through Nebida to the charmingly named Buggerru and our final destination for the day Portixeddu. The coast is stunning.

  • Sardegna road trip day 2, pt 1

    Portixeddu to Bosa
We drove from Portixeddu through the mountains to the sea: Arbus, Montivecchio, Porto Palma, Arborea, Marceddi, Is Arutas, Santa Caterina di Pittinuri and finally Bosa.

Driving on those mountain roads is not for the faint-hearted. The Sardinians have a pre-disposition for driving with the driver’s wheel over the centre line as often as they can. This makes for very interesting passing on the narrow and very twisty roads.

You know that you are going slowly when an ice cream truck overtakes you up hill on the twisty section. I wasn’t in a hurry and I had a very nervous passenger.

  • The coloured houses of Bosa

Located in northern Sardinia, it is a small village of ancient origins. Crossed by the river Temo (only navigable river in Sardinia) it is characterized by typical colorful houses in pastel colors, the wrought-iron balconies, the narrow alleys of the old town give it a magical atmosphere. Bosa has the title of one of the most beautiful villages of Italy.

If you are in Bosa, this is a must see experience.

  • Castello Malaspina

The castle was built by the marquise Malaspina who originally came from Lunigiana in 1112. These lords were given some lands from the pope Giovanni XVIII (including the Temo valley) because they participated, together with Pisans and Genovens to the crusade against the Arabs, who were a threat to the Sardinian people. For this, the population of Bosa Vetus was transferred to the bottom of Serravalle hill, where they felt more protected.

The castle was built in various stages, since the XII century when some towers were constructed, with a scheme similar to Saint Michele’s castle in Cagliari.

  • Dinner in Bosa

Ristorante Essenza al Borgo Sant'Ignazio. Fabulous dinner and best local Vermentino we've had so far.

The restaurant offers refined Sardinian cuisine in a historic setting, characteristic of Bosa's medieval charm. It combines local culinary traditions with views of the town's characteristic pastel-coloured houses.

  • Road trip Bosa - Porto Torres

The spectacular west coast of Sardegna.

Porto Torres, situated on Sardinia's northern coast, combines its role as a busy ferry port with layers of ancient history. The town's most notable ancient monument is the Basilica of San Gavino, one of Sardinia's oldest and largest Romanesque churches, whilst significant Roman ruins include well-preserved thermal baths and the Palazzo di Re Barbaro. The modern port handles regular ferry traffic to Genoa, Marseille, and Corsica, whilst the nearby beach of Balai offers local recreation. The town's industrial heritage from its 20th-century petrochemical works contrasts with its historic centre and archaeological significance, though today it increasingly focuses on tourism and maritime trade.

  • Castelsardo - Santa Teresa Galluro

    Sardegna's stunning west coast.

Castelsardo, perched dramatically on a rocky promontory on Sardinia's northern coast, is one of the island's most striking medieval towns. Its ancient castle, built by the Doria family of Genoa, crowns the settlement and now houses the Museum of Mediterranean Weaving. The town is particularly known for its handicrafts, especially basket weaving, with local artisans still practising traditional techniques in the narrow lanes of the historic centre. The fortified old town's winding streets lead past pastel-coloured houses and medieval churches, including the Cathedral of Sant'Antonio Abate, whilst waterfront restaurants below specialise in local seafood. During sunset, the view from the castle encompasses the Gulf of Asinara and nearby coastline, creating one of northern Sardinia's most photographed scenes.

Santa Teresa Gallura, positioned at Sardinia's northernmost tip, sits on dramatic granite cliffs overlooking the Strait of Bonifacio towards Corsica. The town centres around its main square, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, with its lively café culture and evening passeggiata. The 16th-century Torre di Longonsardo watches over the town's port, whilst the nearby Rena Bianca beach offers pristine white sand and crystal waters within walking distance of the centre. During summer, the town serves as both a ferry connection to Bonifacio and a popular resort, though it maintains its authentic character as a working Galluran town throughout the year.

  • A day in Bonafacio, Corsica, pt2

Bonifacio is a town on the southern tip of the French island of Corsica. It’s known for its lively marina and medieval clifftop citadel. The 13th-century Bastion de l’Etendard houses a small museum with exhibits on the town’s history. L’Escalier du Roi d’Aragon is 187 ancient steps carved into the cliff face. To the southeast, the uninhabited Lavezzi Islands, a nature reserve, have granite boulders and sandy beaches.

  • A day in Bonafacio, Corsica, pt4

The city of Bonifacio is divided into two: the lower city and the upper city. This ancient city/fort overlooks the sea from its limestone promontory and hence its nickname, the city of cliffs . Having survived wars, invasions and epidemics, today it appears proud, perched and unshakable, a city with an emblematic character, typical of Corsica.
