    September 17, 2017 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Before leaving Schaffhausen we visited the fortress, Munot Castle- it's quite an amazing structure with light beaming down into the cavernous interior. What was originally a moat now has deer roaming. The stone spiral stairs take you to an open area on the roof where they now hold concert. Also wonderful views over Schaffhausen.Read more

    September 18, 2017 in France ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Raced back to the church for the 4.00pm chiming of the astronomical clock! Then climbed the stairs to the top of the church tower! So there are 335 steps up then you need to climb back down again! Just as I was in the bell tower ready to descend the bell chimed- nearly fell down the steps!Read more

  • Lyon, Old Town

    September 24, 2017 in France ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

This afternoon we took a walking tour of part of the Old Town of Lyon. Lyon is where the 2 rivers, Rhone and Saone meet. It was a walled city, merchant town and the French centre for silk weaving. There are fascinating little hidden passages or 'short cuts' in the buildings to take you from one street to another. The passages are called La Longue Troboule and have a central courtyard where the house/apartment is reached by stairs. Lyon is the 3rd largest city in France and just a great place to visit. This is our last day on the Continent- fly over to the UK tomorrow to head up to Scotland!Read more

  • Heartbeat!

    September 26, 2017 in England ⋅ 🌫 12 °C

The fog was so thick this morning that we couldn't even see put the window! Visibility was nearly zero, so we decided to drive inland a little to Goathland- the village otherwise known as 'Aidensfield' the village in Heartbeat. Such a cute little village in the middle of the moors. Then a drive back to the coast through Scarborough - so much more commercial than Whitby. Whitby is smaller and a much nicer seaside town.Read more

  • Down to the beach!

    September 26, 2017 in England ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Finally late this afternoon the fog cleared just long enough for us to see the beach! And what a surprise! All these coloured little beach huts lined up. It's a way down the cliff to the water- we walked but it can also be accessed via a lift. By the time we walked along the beach a little to the peer, the fog had set in again with the wind! Cold!!Read more

  • Bonnie Scotland

    September 27, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Drove north into Scotland visiting Rosslyn Chapel in the village of Roslin on the way before arriving in Edinburgh. On my last visit to Rosslyn Chapel with Dad & Neil, there was scaffolding and restoration work in full swing. The scaffolding in now down and much of the restoration completed (thanks to the money generated from the extra tourist after the Da Vinci Code book & film). Unfortunately you can no longer take photos inside.Read more

Left Edinburgh for Glasgow this morning driving via Falkirk to see the Falkirk Wheel (apparently an engineering wonder!!) and also to see the 'Kelpies' - these are giant metal structures of Kelpies which are mythical spirit horses who eat travellers- yes we survived and weren't eaten! They are enormous.Read more

  • Cold, Rain & windy sights of Glasgow

    October 2, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Today 'having fun' was a little bit of a challenge!, however we braved it all with some sightseeing around the city- wondered around Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, St Mongo's Church. Glasgow & the River Clyde was & still is a huge centre for ship building. It's also a big university centre with 3 universities & a huge technical college, although Glasgow is looking a little tired & could do with a tidy up.Read more
