    Izumo-taisha

    Izumo-taisha is thought to be the oldest shrine in Japan and features the an architectural style that predates the arrival of Buddhism. At about 13 meters in length and weighing nearly five tons, its shimenawa—a sacred rope braided from rice straw—is the largest in Japan.
