    21. Oktober 2019 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

A waterfall over a stunning geological formation consisting of alternating layers of conglomerate, sand, and mudstones. I also got stung by a bee.

  • Shuparo Lake

    21. Oktober 2019 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Shuparo Lake (Yubari, Hokkaido) was formed by the construction of Ōyūbari Dam beginning in 1954. Mitsubishi Oyubari Coal Mine and the surrounding woodlands are now at the bottom of the lake. The roads leading into water, the arch of an iron bridge, and the dead, white trees inspire feelings of loneliness.Weiterlesen

  • Shirahige no Taki (Daisetsuzan)

    21. Oktober 2019 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

“White beard” waterfall occurs as water pours into the Biei River directly out of the rock face. The water is a vivid cobalt blue color due to the presence of aluminium hydroxide. In the distance you can see steam rising from the Tokachi group of active volcanoes.Weiterlesen

  • Lake Tōya

    22. Oktober 2019 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

    (1) Lake Tōya, a volcanic caldera, with Mount Yōtei (the perfectly-shaped volcano) in the background. (2) A giant spruce tree (~400 years old) located on Ōshima (“big island”) in Lake Tōya was felled by typhoon No. 18 in 2004; in 2005 a clone of this tree was planted in its place. (3) A former hot spring bathhouse that was damaged by the eruption of Mount Usu in 2000; it has been left to be reclaimed by nature and serves as a reminder of the disaster and of the raw power of nature.Weiterlesen

  • Jigokudani ("Hell Velley")

    23. Oktober 2019 in Japan ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

    (1) Hot springs formed in a exploded volcanic caldera of Mount Kuttara are the source for the thermal baths in Noboribetsu, and the sulfur in the air as well as the bubbling, boiling water gives this area its nickname of “Hell Valley.” (2) At night, lanterns illuminate the boardwalk through Jigokudani. (3) I saw the faint aura of the Milky Way!Weiterlesen

  • Ōyunuma

    24. Oktober 2019 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

    (1) Underneath the smoky Mount Hiyori, hollows at the bottom of Oyunuma heat the lake water to 130 degrees Celsius and release poisonous hydrogen sulfide gas (surface temperature is about 50 C). (2) Okonoyu, a dusty black sulfur spring with a surface temperature around 80 C. (3) Oyunuma Brook Natural Footbath—a good rest stop for hikers to soak in the elements from the hot spring.Weiterlesen

  • 第一瀧本館 Onsen

    24. Oktober 2019 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

The “landscape bath,” a salt spring bath overlooking Jigokudani, was definitely amazing, but I think my favorite was the ferrous sulfate bath just behind it—still a great view but with more sulfur. Photo is not mine (no photography inside).Weiterlesen

    26. Oktober 2019 in Japan ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Went looking for an izakaya between flights. Was just earlier remarking on the spa-quality shampoo at the ryokan in Hokkaido, and found out the “magic” ingredient is horse oil. But horses aren’t farmed for their oil, it’s just a byproduct of harvesting the meat... so... guess what kind of sashimi I’m having right now...Weiterlesen
