  • Whalewatching - expensive chocolatecake

    January 12, 2019, Indian Ocean ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

Get up at 5:30. Short drive to Mirissa to buy the tickets and up to the boat, which should drop off at 6:30. Actual start at about 7:15 clock (the boat must be full). It is very cool, totally cloudy, the waves are violent. About half of the people on board (sooner or later) grab a plastic bag and puke the soul out of their bodies.
But wait - we're on whale watching tour! Hmmm, yes, far ahead you can see a fountain rising. And then maybe a little humpback with fin .... but as I said, very far away. All boats then roar at full throttle to offer something to their guests.

Conclusion: wrong activity for us, never again! The best thing about the whole thing was the chocolate cake on the way home of the boat.

  • Balapitiya, Koggala

    January 13, 2019 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

On our last day with Fernando we went on a boat tour on Maduganga Lake - wonderful mangroves proliferate here. A small stop at a fish farm with "Pedicure" could not be missing - a sensationally fun experience! The visit of a turtle farm rounded off the nature experience for today - on the way back there was even a market on the roadside!
Hach, how I love something like that!

  • Divingweek in Unawatuna

    January 14, 2019 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

The beach of Unawatuna is nice and there are many divingcenters here. We spent the nights @Epic Hotel - very nice, clean with fine breakfast and food.

  • Diving is fun!

    January 17, 2019 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

    14.-20.1.19
The Unawatuna Divers are probably the best-known dive center here running under German Leadership with nice guides. The Divespots are manageable, the underwater world offers nothing intoxicating and has still not recovered from the 2004 tsunami. Of our 8 dives there were at least three under 3 m visibility, the last with a massive current - but at least 27 degrees water temperature!Read more

  • Go on!

    January 20, 2019 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Now our dive week is over. It's amazing how fast time flies! We pack our backpacks, prepare the suitcases for supun pick-up and head north.
The way to Galle takes us a nice motorist and even brings us to the right bus to Colombo - a highway bus in which the passengers are almost frozen. We are happy to be - after about 2 hours drive - to feel sun on our skin again! Then a few stops with city stroll bus to Dehiwala, from where we walk to our hostel.Read more

  • Mount Lavinia

    January 20, 2019 in Sri Lanka ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

Beach life - this word can probably describe our impression of Mount Lavinia the most. On the first evening hundreds of people cavort on the beach and in the water. Old, young, toddlers - it's incredible! I wonder why? Well, it's a full moon night - so this people-casserole here.
We spent some nice hours with our toes in the sand and some juice in our hands ...

  • Daytrip to Colombo

    January 21, 2019 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

What would the Sinhalese traffic network be without the British colonial forces? The stations, trains, rails - everything seems still in its original state, no visible renewal or maintenance work. We drove to Colombo to get our train ticket for the trip to Jaffna (Nightmail - or Nightmare?). The ride goes along the beach - fantastic! I stand at the open door and am happy!

Colombo is a busy city - everywhere is sold, repaired etc. And the traffic roars, honks, squeaks, rushes, stinks - idyllic!

  • Nighttrain to Jaffna!

    January 21, 2019 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

What can I say? Nine hours of driving in deafening noise (the connecting plates between the cars collide, the connecting doors can not be closed), the rails seem to have "potholes" - it sometimes lifts up to 15 cm from the seat - sleep is not too think. But some tough guys manage it!
    Departure Colombo 20:30 - Jaffna arrival 5:15.

  • The Northern Province: Jaffna

    January 22, 2019 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Here it is - the "dangerous" North!?
The People around are smiling and talking to us, many of them are well educated in english language. It seems to be less traffic and more serious drivingstyle as in the crowdy south.
It looks more clean - maybe because the word "trashbin" is not unknown?

But there are only few Restaurants, juicebar and coffeeshops and there are only a few tourists to be found.

  • Delft-Island

    January 24, 2019 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

The ferry ride to the island, which takes an hour, is an experience in itself. On the Island we hired a Tuc-tuc to see Remains of Dutch Fort, Dutch Pigeon Hole, growing rock, Baobab-Tree and the wild horses which are very lovely!Read more

  • Loud, stinking, crazy!

    January 24, 2019 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

You can easily travel around Sri Lanka by Train, Bus and Tuc-Tuc.
But maybe it is more safe to take a private guide - the driving-reglement seems to be:
First the bigger, stronger one - the most crazy guys are at the busses.
"Do not brake - you will lose!"

Train- and bus-rides are "have-to-do-adventures" on this island! Of course you cannot miss all the millions tuc-tuc everywhere ...

  • Train-Impressions

    January 25, 2019 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

1864 the british colonizers founded the Sri Lankan Railways. It seems, nothing has been changed since this time … The trains and infrastructure is very old - but it works! The traindrivers are very proud about their job and the minimum 50 years old diesel-engines, which run around 80 km/h.Read more
