I. AFR/ZA - Johannesburg

Von Victoria Falls ging es mit British Airways knapp 1,5h nach Johannesburg, wo ich von meiner Freundin Catherine abgeholt wurde.
Catherine und ich haben uns vor knapp 3 Jahren in Indien kennengelernt und sie hat mir netterweise angeboten, die 2 Tage bei ihr zu verbringen - eine bessere Reise- und Unterkunftsmöglichkeit gibt es wohl kaum ;)

So sieht man z.B. wie die Einheimischen in Südafrika leben:
Alle Häuser sind von relativ hohen Mauern inkl. Maschendraht und Kameras umgeben, es gibt oft einen Sicherheitsbeauftragten und da Arbeitnehmer hier so günstig sind, haben viele auch eine eigene Putzfrau sowie es wird überall assistiert, beim Tanken beispielsweise. Sicherheit für Südafrikaner ist wie Regen für Briten - es wird oft und ausgiebig darüber geredet :)
Die Wohngegend selbst ist super schön, es gibt jede Menge fliederfarbene Bäume, die nur jetzt für ein paar Wochen blühen und viel Wasser brauchen - ein Problem in einer Stadt ohne natürliche Wasserquelle, bei der man für jeden Regen dankbar ist; aber Joburg ist neben der Goldindustrie bekannt als der größte menschengemachte Wald.

Am ersten Abend waren wir gleich zu einem Thanksgiving-Dinner von Catherines Freunden eingeladen und das war eine super Erfahrung:
Wir waren ca. 15 Leute aller Rassen und Alter, es gab leckeres Essen inkl. Vorspeise, Hauptspeise und Nachtisch begleitet von Dankesspielen, -reden und -gebeten - Ach, es war einfach nur toll :)))

Am nächsten Tag bin ich mit dem Gautrain von Rosebank Station zur Park Station Gefahr und habe dann ganz tourimäßig eine Sightseeing-Tour gemacht: Ich war u.a. auf mit 225m Afrikas höchstem Gebäude, Apartheid Museum, Constitutional Hill sowie im Studentenviertel und konnte dabei sowie bei einer 2h Free Walking Tour durch Downtown sehr viel von Südafrikas Geschichte lernen.
Danach war ich noch in der Rosebank Mall, einem sehr schönen Einkaufszentrum bevor ich dann mit Catherine in der Nelson Mandela Mall zu Abendessen ging und in alten Reiseerinnerungen und -tipps schwelgte ;)))

Entgegen aller Behauptungen habe ich mich hier nicht mega unsicher or bedroht gefühlt und hatte noch 2 schöne letzte Tage in Afrika - danke nochmal, Catherine :-*

I was flying from Vic Falls to Joburg with British Airways and got picked up from the airport by my friend Catherine.
Catherine and I met in India roughly 3 years ago and she was so kind to offer me to stay at her place for the 2 days - there is hardly any better way of travelling and accommodation ;)

It is a good possibility to see how the locals live in South Africa:
All houses are surrounded by relatively high walls including fences and cameras, there is often a security guard and since labour is so cheap many people have a cleaning lady and a lot of assistance, e.g. at petrol stations. Security for South Africans is like the weather for British - it is often and thoroughly discussed :)
The suburb itself is quite nice, there are a lot of purple trees which only nourish now and need a lot of water - quite a problem in a city without natural water resource where everyone is grateful for rain; but apart from the gold and mining industry Joburg is known as the largest man-made forest in the world.

On the first evening we were invited to a Thanksgiving-Dinner of Catherines friends which was a really nice experience:
We were about 15 people of all races and ages, there was delicious food inclusive starters, main courses and deserts accompanied by thanksgiving games, speeches and prayers - ah it was just amazing :)))

On the following day I took the train from Rosebank to Park Station to act as a tourist and do a sightseeing tour: Amongst others I have been to Africa's tallest building of 225m, Apartheid Museum, Constitutional Hill as well as Student Quarter and together with a 2hrs Free Walking Tour to Downtown could learn a lot about South Africa's history.
After that I went to Rosebank Mall,a nice shopping centre before going out for dinner with Catherine at Nelson Mandela Mall where we really enjoyed talking about old travel memories and travel in general ;)))

Despite all talking I did not feel incredibly unsafe and followed and spent another two last days in Africa - thanks again, Catherine :-*Read more
