We took the collectivo bus to the west side of isla colon to see the "famous" starfish Beach. Lovely swimming but not too many starfish. The island has new roads as of 2023 and they are very smooth and include bike paths. The collectivo was $5 round trip per person.Read more

  • Chocolate Tour

    October 11 in Panama

Not what you're thinking (if you think like us).

We got picked up by panga (small speedboat) and were.taken over to San Cristobal island by a very skilled captain who navigated through the waves for a ride much smoother than it could have been.

We met our guide Sergio who walked us through his village showing us key sites like the school, health clinic, new concrete paths, sports field and more.

He then gave us an orientation to cocoa farming. He is the farmer. He plants three varieties. They vary in how long it takes to grow before harvest (2 to 3.5 years). They harvest every four months. They get about $17 per pod from the coop.

They showed how the cocoa is processed (fermented, sun dried, roasted, ground). Molly tried her hand at grinding - hard work! They prepared a sample of chocolate. It was with fresh ground ginger and tamarind with raw sugar cane plus coco then rolled in grated coconut.

They have sloths, spiders, poisonous frogs and pretty flowers.

  • Currency, hydrant and bears

    October 10 in Panama

The official currency of Panama is the Panamanian Balboa (PAB), which is pegged to the US dollar at a one-to-one exchange rate. Both the Balboa and the US dollar circulate in the country, with the Balboa primarily used in coin form.

This would be s difficult hydrant to hit.

Not really bears. Eaton found more for legged friends. These two looked like bears. She kindly have them some of the dog food she had been carrying (courtesy of Derek). They happily chomped it up!

  • Earthquake

    October 9 in Panama

    We are fine.

Yup! We lived it! We were coming back from diving in Bocas del Toro walking along the path and it felt like i had gotten off a boat and not readjusted to land. I feared I was dizzy and about to pass out, but it was the ground acting like a wave. I have felt other earthquakes, but they were shakey not wavey. We have felt some aftershocks this afternoon.

We are up in the northeast corner of Panama.

No damage, no impact here. Life went back to usual very quickly.
