Maine and Canadian coasts

We had a nice, easy day coming over, 2’ swells and 10-12 knots for a couple of hours. Once we reached the entrance to Passamaquoddy Bay, the water turned to glass. We watched dozens of porpoises playing, noticed a bird we hadn’t seen before, and experienced the Old Sow and the piglets.

The Old Sow is an area where the incoming tidal current from the ocean meets the flow of the outgoing St. Croix River. About 3 hours before the tide change, the currents smash together and create whirlpools, eddies, and boils. They can overpower small boats. We came along about an hour after, and still saw the wild currents. David was at the helm and noticed the strong pull, while I was taking pictures. The pictures may not look very remarkable, until you realize that all the surrounding water was as smooth as glass, but would be interrupted by these eddies and juxtaposed currents.
