Fishing weirs are common here. We have passed by two already. One of the pictures below shows one, if you can enlarge it. There is an arrow pointing to it.

I thought Post Office Pizza and Gift Shop deserves recognition because it managed to keep so much of the original building intact.Read more

  • Looks can be deceiving

    August 28, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

Today’s sunset! While it looks beautiful, we are on a mooring exposed to 20-25 kt winds out of the south, and in a spot that has 20+ foot tides.😩 It’s going to be a-rockin tonight!

  • Landed in St. Andrews, Canada

    August 29, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We had a nice, easy day coming over, 2’ swells and 10-12 knots for a couple of hours. Once we reached the entrance to Passamaquoddy Bay, the water turned to glass. We watched dozens of porpoises playing, noticed a bird we hadn’t seen before, and experienced the Old Sow and the piglets.

The Old Sow is an area where the incoming tidal current from the ocean meets the flow of the outgoing St. Croix River. About 3 hours before the tide change, the currents smash together and create whirlpools, eddies, and boils. They can overpower small boats. We came along about an hour after, and still saw the wild currents. David was at the helm and noticed the strong pull, while I was taking pictures. The pictures may not look very remarkable, until you realize that all the surrounding water was as smooth as glass, but would be interrupted by these eddies and juxtaposed currents. It was one of the most unusual oceanic events we have seen!!

  • Onshore at St Andrews

    August 30, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

St. Andrews is full of color and charm, and easy to be in. People are very helpful, and when on a boat, it seems we are always asking for help. Today the Wharfinger, Carl, took our propane tank with him on his scooter to get it filled for us a mile away.

This morning was rainy, which means Laundry Day. It was a good thing, too, as it had been a while since the last time. 😬 Once we got it going (after David’s trip to the bank to exchange $10US for Canadian quarters)(which required a flurry of activity including managers), we found a restaurant for breakfast, and then walked around into the neighborhoods. We are guessing they have a severe deer problem, as we saw 6-7 deer helping themselves to the beautiful gardens just on our short walk. And they were not concerned about us one bit.

  • Kingsbrae Garden

    August 30, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

This afternoon we went to the Kingsbrae Garden, a 27 acre plot with around 20 different sub-gardens: roses, perennials, pond, “scents and sensitivity” garden, an Acadian forest, a maze, a labyrinth, farm animals, and even a secret garden!

It was hard to choose the photos today, I might have to add others later.

  • Cutler, ME: Long day!

    August 31, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 55 °F

Goodbye to St. Andrew, hello to whales! Returned to US (that’s why the map shows us going to Eastport— the only reason was to report to Customs, then had to go back up the channel and around Campobello Isl. to head south) did almost 60 miles of sailing today 👍 Planning the next days sail.

Tonight (Friday) we are staying in Cutler Harbor. Very quiet and peaceful.

  • Roque Island Archipelago

    September 1, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more peaceful cove. Once anchored, we shut the engine off and heard only bird calls and fish plopping in the water. A heron flew nearby, so that is tonight’s picture.

This island has been owned and worked by the same two families for over a hundred years, and is reputedly self-sufficient.
