Farewell to Crete

Oh no, not Crete again ....

Even more Crete ...

Crete unveiled

Food & drink

Thousands of cafes and many, many delightful small bakeries. Went on a wine tasting to learn about the many indigenous grapes that grow on this island.
Amari village and valley

The remote Amari valley, overlooked by Mount Idi, is one of Crete's most scenic areas, dotted with churches, olive groves and vineyards.
Phaistos Minoan Palace

The earliest palace (1900-1700 BC) was built on deposits from the Neolithic and early Minoan period (3000-2000 BC). This was partly replaced in 1700 BC until abandoned in 1450 BC.

Rethymno Archaeological Museum

Short visit to Rethymno

Crete's third largest city after Heraklion and Chania. Another pretty port with many Venetian remains.
Rethymno - weaving & embroidery

Amazing work created by one local woman, Chrysi Angelidaki, and preserved in the local museum.
Knossos

Very disappointed by Knossos. "Restored" with a very heavy hand using lots of concrete by Victorian gentleman, Sir Arthur Evans.
Underneath are the 4000 year old remains of the great MinoanLes mer
Heraklion museum

The main reason for coming here. Wonderful and breathtaking display of Neolithic and Minoan artefacts.
A short visit to Heraklion

Typical capital: busy noisy dirty. Pretty sure we were short changed for our lunch. Shame after the really nice treatment we have had during the rest of our visit.
Samaria Gorge & White Mountains

Botanical gardens

Our favourite beach.

Asi Gonia

Read the amazing story of "The Cretan Runner" about George Psychoundakis contribution to the war effort in Crete. Sufficiently moved to make a "pilgramige" to his home village of Asi Gonia. So glad ILes mer
Western Crete

Cretan wedding

A wedding kicked off in the house opposite. We particularly liked the Security man at the front gate. (How did he know we'd gatecrash?) And the gun fire later on ...
Chania old port

Mixture of Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish! Oh and some Greek.
Unusual vehicles

Started to spot them. Will add more when I see them
Chania, Crete

Two weeks to explore this amazing island, especially the Bronze age Minoan culture. They have been making wine here for thousands of years ... should be fun!
Use of English

I do like unusual use of English, sometimes clever sometimes unintentionally funny. Enjoy
