  • Rifle Range to MacRitchie Reservoir

    3 Şubat 2025, Singapur ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Last year, I visited the newly opened Rifle Range Nature Park. During my visit, I noted there were directional signs indicating that MacRitchie was 3km away. I took "MacRitchie" to mean MacRitchie Reservoir. I was a little skeptical that it was only 3km away, but I decided to give it a try because I thought NParks may have built some kind of park connector.

Setting off from Bukit Timah Road, the first part of the trail in the park took me just west of the main trail to Coluga Nest for a little over 1km. The trail then exited out onto Rifle Range Road, from which point, directional signage was pretty much non-existent. I trudged up the road hoping I would encounter signage that would make good on the promise of a 3km hike to MacRitchie. Sadly, this was not the case; after a little over 2km, I reached the end of the road, at which point I was at the western EDGE of MacRitchie Central Catchment Nature Reserve. I was a little bit annoyed at having been misled, but it was also my fault for not researching further.

When I was living in Singapore, I used to cycle up the steep Rifle Range Road, lock up my bike, and hike about 30 minutes to what I thought was MacRitchie Reservoir. Today's hike led me to the same trailhead, except this time there was a map of the area. I discovered from the map that the reservoir I used to hike to was actually Lower Pierce Reservoir. I looked at the map and decided to make my way to the Jelutong Tower and MacRitchie Reservoir, and then exit via the Singapore Island Country Club (SICC). I could also have taken a different path to visit Upper Pierce Reservoir's Treetop Walk, but I decided to reserve that for another trip.

The hike to Jelutong Tower was about 2km. When I got there, I climbed up to the top level and enjoyed the views. MacRitchie Reservoir was in the distance. I was a little concerned that the tower swayed a little when other people were climbing it, so I made my way back down.

From the tower, I followed the trail leading to MacRitchie Reservoir and out to Lornie Road. I hit the SICC not long after. The SICC was fenced in to keep out riff raff like me, but it was a very discreet fence with strategically placed vegetation to make it less obvious. The path then led to a bridge over the reservoir - hikers and SICC shared the same bridge; SICC was on the right, and the hiking path was on the left. The two were seperated by potted plants. Only in Singapore would the divide between crazy rich and minions be demarcated so politely - but passive aggressively - by potted plants!

After a while, I reached the MacRitchie Reservoir boardwalk. Upon examining the map, I saw that the boardwalk could take me to MacRitchie Park, but I also had the option of taking a shortcut out to Lornie Road if I wanted to. I decided to walk along the boardwalk. Back in my youth, we had our kayaking training in MacRitchie, and we also did our cross country competitions there, so there was some element of nostalgia driving my decision to walk along the reservoir edge. However, I soon realized I was getting tired as it was hot and what I thought would be a 3km walk had already clocked well over 8km. So, I opted to take the shortcut out to Lornie Road from where I took a bus back to my mother's condo.

  • Bukit Timah Hill

    4 Şubat 2025, Singapur ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

I usually summit Singapore's tallest peak - all 163 meters of it LOL - when I am there. This time round, I hiked up the main road, and then down via the North View Path. The path led me to Dairy Farm Road after which I made my way to Rail Mall. It rained as I got to Rail Mall so I rewarded myself with roti prata and teh tarik at Springleaf Prata.Okumaya devam et

  • Asian Civilisations Museum

    5 Şubat 2025, Singapur ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

It rained on Wednesday, so I decided to make it a museum day. My first stop was the Asian Civilisations Museum. The first gallery I encountered focused on maritime trade, and it featured artifacts from China, India, and the Middle East recovered from shipwrecks in the area.

Among the other galleries, I was most interested by the galleries featuring animistic artifacts from the region, as well as Islamic and Buddhist artifacts.

  • National Gallery

    5 Şubat 2025, Singapur ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

After exiting the Asian Civilisations Museum, I walked over to Raffles Place for a quick snack before continuing on to the National Gallery which is housed in the former Supreme Court building. I started on the rooftop which features an installation called Glisten by Lisa Reihana of New Zealand. I also enjoyed the 360 degree view of the city from the rooftop.

My next stop was a collection by Singaporean artist Lim Tze Peng before I explored the 14 galleries devoted to Southeast Asian art. The Southeast Asian galleries were divided by time period, and I was natirally drawn to the contemporary art section.

  • Mandai Boardwalk

    7 Şubat 2025, Singapur ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

I spent Friday afternoon walking the newly opened 3.3km Mandai Boardwalk. The boardwalk skirts the edge of Upper Pierce Reservoir with the zoo just inland from it. It was a pleasant walk, but parts of it was marred by the noise coming from the zoo visitors.

Along the walk, I saw giraffes, and a montor lizard swimming in the reservoir.

  • Happy Birthday Mum + Other Celebrations

    8 Şubat 2025, Singapur ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

We celebrated my mother's 90th birthday with a dinner at Spring Court in Chinatown. For her birthday gift, I looked in the National Archives' online search site and presented her with a printed copy of the front page of the Straits Times on the day she was born.

During the week I was in Singapore, I also met up with other friends. I lumped the photos into this entry.

  • Singapore to Tokyo Haneda

    9 Şubat 2025, Singapur ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

    Japan Airlines JL38 | SIN/HND
    Business Class
    Boeing 767-300ER | JA617J
    ATD/0214 | ATA/0941
    Qatar Airways Lounge

Since I was a ticketed Business Class passenger, I took this opportunity to use the Qatar Airways lounge which only admits First and Business Class passengers; they don't admit Economy Class passengers with status, and they don't even admit passengers who upgraded using miles.

The lounge was small-ish but very pleasant, and they offered sit down dining which is usually reserved for First Class. I knew I would get to eat for another 8 hours or so, so I had a laksa supper in the lounge before boarding.

On JL38, I deliberately chose a seat on the port side hoping to catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji during descent into Haneda. As luck would have it, it was a clear day and I had a great view of Mount Fuji as we descended over Yokohama and Tokyo Bay.

  • Yayoi Kusama Museum

    9 Şubat 2025, Japonya ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

I recently learned that Yayoi Kusama has a museum in Shinjuku. I definitely wanted to experience her museum, and so I booked advance tickets to visit.

After landing at Haneda, I took the Airport Limousine bus to Shinjuku. Once there, I stored my larger backpack in a locker and wandered out looking for lunch. I soon chanced upon a kaiten sushi restaurant where I had a good lunch before hopping onto the Toei Oedo line to get to the museum.

The Yayoi Kusama Museum is a small, five storey exhibition space. Photography is forbidden on the first three floors, unfortunately. These three floors featured paintings and soft, phallic figures from her themed collection "I would overcome death and go on living". From the exhibit, I learned that Kusama has struggled with mental health and suicidal ideation for decades. Her recent artwork focuses on her concept of "self-obliteration" (where boundaries between self and motifs from her hallucinations get blurred), while also addressing the beauty of life in light of her mortality. I also learned that she views polka dots - which is what I primarily knew her for - as pieces of an infinite universe.

In addition to the artwork, the second floor featured a collage of newpaper articles from which I learned that Kusama lived in New York in the 1960s and 1970s, and she staged anti-war protests there by painting polka dots on naked protestors.

Photography was allowed on the fourth and fifth floors. The fourth floor featured a video called "Song of a Manhattan Suicide Addict". The short video has Kusama singing a song while her artwork is projected behind her. The colorful pieces - many of which were featured on the first three levels - is also reflected onto mirrors flanking the screen. Recording the video is not allowed, so I snapped lots of still images which are shown here.

The fifth floor featured one of Kuasama's famous polka dot pumpkins.

  • Tokyo Metropolitan Building

    9 Şubat 2025, Japonya ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

I had planned to seek out some Atlas Obscura sites after the Yayoi Kusama Museum, but since it was such a clear day, I decided to go to the viewing platform on the 54th floor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Building in the hope of seeing Mount Fuji from there. On my prior trips to various viewing platforms (Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, and the Metropolitan Building), Mount Fuji was obscured by clouds. Alas, this was not to be; Mount Fuji was obscured by haze by the time I got to the viewing platform. I could see an outline of the volcano, though, which is a big improvement from my other trips.Okumaya devam et

  • Shinjuku

    9 Şubat 2025, Japonya ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

I wandered around the Shinjuku area for a bit before hopping onto the Narita Express to get to Narita Airport for my flight back. The highlight was the giant 3D cat billboard. I stood amused as the calico emerged and did different cat things. I also enjoyed the Sunday crowds and snacked on taiyaki.Okumaya devam et
