  • Marakoopa Caves

    29. helmikuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Another beautiful day. Had a little rain overnight.

Revisited Marakoopa Caves this morning. We first did it on our honeymoon all those years ago.
Lots of glow worms. We also did the walk up and back to the cave through the Palm Grove. An extra 15mins each way. So pretty. Was worth the walk instead of driving up. With all the steps inside the cave, we certainly got our exercise today.

We were thrilled to spot an echidna on our drive this morning. An adorable little juvenile.

  • Deloraine

    2.–4. maalisk. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Camping at the Deloraine RV site. Such a pretty town. We stopped here for breakfast when we got off the boat on our ill-fated covid trip. Then again, 10 days later, to grab a subway for lunch, heading back to Devonport to catch the boat back.

Walked along the river this afternoon. Then, down the main street back to the van. I had forgotten about all the cute statues along the street.

  • Chudleigh

    3. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

Did a mini food trail this morning. Drove back to Chudleigh. We stopped here yesterday on the way to Deloraine. Had a great stall, with vegies, eggs, and baked goods. Pick up yummy fresh veg and eggs.

We wanted to visit Melita Honey Farmshop. But it was closed yesterday and opened today. Stocked up on lots of great honey. We have become honey addicts. Not to forget their great ice cream. Was also going to grab some more vegies, but they were closed today.

On the way back, we called into 41° south salmon farm. Delicious hot smoked salmon and more of our fresh vegies for dinner tonight. Plus a nice salmon rillettes on crackers while Graham watches the footy this avo.

  • Cradle Mountain-night tour

    4. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

We had an excellent night spotlighting. So many animals. We kicked off with a wombat in at the visitors centre. Gosh, has this place changed. When we were here on our honeymoon, we just drove down to Lake Dove. Signed the hikers book and took off for the day. Now it's shuttle buses, cafes and a huge visitor centre with a massive car park.

We spotted heaps of wombats, brush tail possums, Bennett's wallabies, and Pademelons. But the icing on the cake had to be seeing an Eastern Quoll. The first time we have ever seen one in the wild. A very rear sighting. Plus, it was very obliging and sat quietly on the side of the road for ages while we all got our happy snaps.

Paul was an amazing guide. With a real love of the park and it flora and fauna.

  • Devils Gullet

    5. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Did the drive to Devils Gullet today. Spectacular views. Luckily we could drive most of the way. Then, a short hike at the end. The altitude is a struggle for me. Steps I would normally have no real issue with had me huffing and puffing. But was well worth the effort.
We also drove along the Mersey River. Checked out the dams and hydro system. Stopped were they have a white water course for our picnic lunch. Very interesting setup.
Ended up where the keen hikers leave to do Walls of Jerusalem.

  • Lake Lilla

    7. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Another beautiful walk. Started a Dove Lake. Down hill through the forest. Some rough and a little challenging terrain for us. Past Lake Lilla. Then, finally out on the board, walk through the Alpine Plains where the Overland walk starts. Not as long as yesterday, but still clocked up almost 4k in 1.5hrs.

We did well doing Dove Lake yesterday as half the track is closed for a few days while they are helicoptering in material to do repairs.

  • Forth

    9.–16. maalisk. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We had a couple of relaxing days here.
Was very nice camped next to the river. Shame about the huge fence with barbwire across to top.
We went for a couple of drives. Visited the Berry Patch. Best icecream so far. They were huge, plus really heavy. Packed with fresh berries.
Discovered another great vegie stall. Stocked up again. We are definitely get our vegetables daily quota.
A definite lack of photos here. Will need to do better.

  • Fern Glade Platypus Reserve

    13. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Back walking this morning after a few lazy days. Just a gentle stroll along the Emu River looking for platypus... no luck. But we did spot lots of Pademelons. A few mums with their bubs. Plus, a bonus spotting of a Bettong.
The fern glade is only minutes from the centre of Bernie, but it felt like you were miles for anywhere.

  • Stanley

    15. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Visited Stanley today. Was a lovely little town. So many beautiful old buildings and homes.

They film the movie 'The light between Oceans' here. Must remember to see if we came find it to watch.

The Highveiw estate is magnificent. All the old stone buildings. We didn't do the tour. Just had a stickybeak from the road.

My type of town. Oh, and not forgetting the Providor. So many yummy things. No will power. I stocked up on chutneys and cheese. While Graham hit the chocolate and licorice.

  • Stanley - The Nut

    15. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

I would like to say we walked the path to the top of The Nut... but we thought the chair lift was a much better option.

But we did do the 2k walk around the top. The views were spectacular. We were amazed at all the vegetation. Even trees on the sheltered side. We were pleased that a gentleman advised us to go clockwise around the walk. The other way you were faced with lots of steps going up. Much better coming down them.
Check out Graham's excited face. In the selfie. They had a stand to pop your phone set on time to take your selfie. Such fun.

  • Dip Falls

    16. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Visited Dip Falls. Not a lot of water running over at the moment. Apparently, it's spectacular after heavy rain.
Was still a lovely drive. The walk to the fall took us down 208 steps. Then, naturally, 208 back up again. Graham counted them. Was worth the effort.

Found some old machinery left behind from when the area was logged.

Then continued up the road to Big Tree. Another lovely walk.

    17. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Just some of my favourite photos from our forest walks.

    Interesting fact
The magnificent ferns in a lot of the photos only grow a couple of cm a year. Can live for over a 1000 years. Their origins trace back to the Gondwana period. Image how old some of these beautiful ferns are.Lue lisää

  • The Tarkine Drive

    17. maaliskuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Lots of beautiful stops and short walk on this drive.

Our favourite had to be Trowutta Arch. The walk was enchanting... Graham even described it as the Enchanted Forest. The arch at the end was fabulous.

Our next favourite was Lake Chisholm. Another picturesque walk through the forest. This one Graham named the Emerald Forest. It bought us out at what is one of Australia's finest flooded limestone sink-hole.

    We also visited
    - Tayatea Bridge, Arthur River
    - Milkshake Hills
    - Sinkhole lookout
    - Rapid River
    - Dempster Plains lookout
    - Sumac Lookout, Arthur River

  • Ross

    22.–27. maalisk. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We are camped at Park in a Paddock a few minutes out of Ross. Ron is an excellent host and loves a chat. Power for $15 per night. Plus, there is a $3 washing machine. As well as the fun of feeding the chooks your food scraps... what more could you want.

Ross is a very picturesque town. There are so many beautiful old buildings. Including the Convict Female Factory. The streets are lined with magnificent old trees. We enjoyed just wandering around. Had a scallop pie for lunch. My daring husband couldn't understand why you would want a pie filled with potato scallops.

We visited Ross on our honeymoon. Graham bought me a lovely hand carved horse from the local Rocking Horse man. He no longer lives here. Has moved to NSW.

Just a short drive down the road today to explore Campbell Town.

We meet an echidna crossing the bridge. He was using the raised pedestrian lane. Made it across safely.

There is an interesting convict brick trail along the main street. With information about when and why they we set here.

As well as wonderful carvings near the bridge. As well as may lovely old buildings. The stone they used from around this area is such a lovely colour.

We had a very cold, but lovely day visiting Oatlands.

The historical mill precinct was wonderful. Had been very nicely restored by the distillery that is adjoining the mill.

It was a perfect day to enjoy a delicious Devonshire Tea. The scones were huge. The homemade raspberry jam was perfect. Would be very dangerous if we lived in the area. I could see us dropping offen.Lue lisää

  • Derwent Bridge

    26.–28. maalisk. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Had a great free camp at the Derwent Bridge Pub.
Not much in Derwent Bridge, but is a great base to visit the area.

We went to The Wall in the morning. There are no photos. Cameras and post are not allowed. Which was fantastic. It really allows you to just take it all in. The wall is a series of carved panels. I have no words to describe them. They actually left me quite emotional. I was told,'If you go nowhere else in Tasmania. Go to The Wall' some of the best advice I have ever had.

We then visited Lake St Claire. Finally made it to the end of the Overland Track from Cradle Mountain. Was a big hike😆😆😆. No, really, only did the short walk through the forest then back along the lake shore. We would probably have done one of the bigger walks if we stayed another day. But wanted to move on and try and get into Mount Feild National Park for Easter.

The Gordon Franklin Wild River National Park is also in the area. We went bush bashing along a very rutted track to explore. Come out at an extremely barron area. With a trickle of water and tree stumps. It still had a strange bueaty to it.
