Assumption of Mary

We are in Cambarro of the feast of the Assumption of Mary - We don’t attend the celebratory masses but we do enjoy the bangers/ flares they let off at the pier to celebrate. They go off numerous times over several days. We try and figure out a sequence or timing but it seems fairly random so I jump with fright plenty of times as they are let off really close by. Colm makes a great sport of collecting the deprise sticks from the water and has subsequently made weapons with them. We are only delighted to have them spinning around in the small space we inhabit on Régal.
We spend four days in Cambarro marina, mixing boat business and pleasure. There is a laundrette and supermarket beyond the old town which we visit frequently. We go up the hill with bags of dirty laundry passing the walking tours and day trippers and come back down with a trolley full of shopping and wet laundry - Glamorous it ain’t.
There is a beach within 5 minutes walk as well a nice cafe with internet and the town is small enough for Ruby and Colm to navigate on their own. It is nice for everyone to go and pursue their own happiness when the jobs are done.Read more

Horreos und ein paar Kuscheleinheiten

Das Fischerdorf Combarro ist bekannt für seine kleine süße Altstadt und für die vielen Horreos direkt am Strand. Horreos sind kleine Getreide- oder Fischspeicher auf Stelzen, die meist mit einem Kreuz geschmückt sind.

Bei einer Pause haben wir kuschelbedürftigen Besuch bekommen. Der schöne weiße Kater hat sich ein paar Streicheleinheiten abgeholt und wir alle haben es sehr genossen. Nach einer halben Stunde hat er sich geputzt und ist weiter gezogen.... Gefühlt hatten wir einen kurzen Besuch von Smörrebröd. 😍Read more

Camino Portuguese Day 13

Yesterday afternoon we were watching what looked like a tractor inspection in the parking lot by the albergue. All small tractors, not like the big ones at home.

Then we went to a Pilgrim Blessing at the Monastery. I read this story in my guidebook:

“The Cistercian monastery was founded by a knight called Ero in the 12th century. According to a popular legend, Ero went for a walk in the woods one day and came upon a bird singing so beautifully that he fell into a trance which lasted for 300 years. The monastery was abandoned in 1837; restoration began in 1963, and in 1989 Cistercian nuns moved in.”

The nuns we saw ranged in age from about 25 to 85. It was a nice service with the nuns singing and then saying the blessing in several languages.

We got some more sugar packet wisdom this morning. I took a screenshot of the google translation.

Here’s what the guide book says about today’s walk:

“This is a stunning stage that follows the Ruta de la Piedra y del Agua (‘stone and water route’), passing 51 ancient mills and cascading falls. It then accompanies the River Umia, passing albariño grapevines and fields before reaching the Ría de Arousa and Vilanova de Arousa.Read more

Combarro to Armenteira

We stopped for brunch before the hill. Tortilla Español. This time I shared with Sharon and we still had leftovers for later. Combarro is also known for fishing and horreos.

Then we started to climb. And climb. We went from sea level to over 450m elevation. Basically uphill for about 9 km. We had some lovely views, but it was challenging.

We arrived at Armenteira, checked out the Monastery, then checked into the Municipal Albergue. Not fancy today.

Tomorrow will be almost all downhill.Read more

We came up to a Spanish man who was quite excited for us to make a short detour to this special place. He even took my walking stick and drew a map in the dirt.

It was quite a special display, a little like some fairy tale where everyone was enchanted and turned to stone.Read more

Barrantes to Vilanova de Arousa

The first half of the day was fabulous, first on the Ruta de Piedra y Agua, then beside the Rio Umia - all on dirt trails. So lovely and mostly downhill. Also alongside many vineyards.

But because we took our time and a lot of photos, our progress was slower than usual, so by the time we got to our destination we were knackered (Camino term).Read more

Combarro

We enjoy the change of being tied up at a marina. SUP and dingy tied up, we can step off Régal and wander up the town whenever we want.
Cambarro is a beautiful town and buses of tourists come to walk through its historic narrow streets that are carved into the rock. The town is famous for ‘horreos’ - old raised stone grain stores. These stone structures are all over Galicia but it is the number of them in town that brings tourists like us to Combarro. There are horreos outside houses, in gardens and allotments and lining part of the shore. We go full tourist on our first evening and eat Paella in the square in the old town.
I order Albarino, the local white wine which has become my tipple of late. The waitress, when she brings it, takes a wobble and spills it all over Colm- he is drenched in it. Not to worry, the boat is only 5 minutes away so he and Ruby dash back for a hose down and change of clothes while I get served another glass. The benefits of being at docked at a marina.
Later we get a taste of traditional music with the wandering pipe band - we are in tourist heaven.Read more

Day 4 at the Camino

Same procedure as every day. Alarm clock at 6.30h, but I woke up at 5.15h as at that time the first pilgrims get up. We are now already in the 100km radius of Santiago and there are more pilgrims. You even find more improvised "shop", selling coffee, fruits and souvenirs out of their car.
We decided to go the "camino espiritual", which takes 1 or 2 days longer than the normal route, but is less crowded. After the forth day, you already feel the 120km in your bones and feet and it is almost the general topic of the pilgrims who has which injuries or "damages".
We stay at a small, pittoresque fishing village.
Interesting route: the yellow arrows of the Camino wanted to guide us through the water. Later we found out, that at the right time the water has gone because of the tide.
The "youth" is buying drinks at the supermarket to get prepared for Saturday evening.Read more

We went for a walk in the forest and came back with like two kilos of wild chestnut. We also had freshly made churro halfway since there was a man selling them in front of the monastery for 1€, who could ever resist that? Ahh it's hard to not to gain weight here! 😁Read more

Camino Day 5 to Armenteira

Holly didn’t feel well so she took a cab and I walked alone. Walked at a fast pace and even ran some. Steep, steep hills today! Met lots of pilgrims from all over—Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Columbia, Italy, Hungary and finally someone from US. Pilgrims blessing service at the monastery in the evening.Read more
