      Leaving Ledigos

      28 juni 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

Bunch of pics from Ledigos this morning on our way to Sahagun. Typical breakfast (less the coffee for Sean), church, bridge, non-typical portal, a fence made of railroad tracks, close-ups of us at the portal, and a pilgrim statue.

In addition, another 360 morning view.

It was a relatively short and easy walk today. Only 13 miles as we wanted to spend time with friends in Sahagun, and fairly cool to start out—especially compared to typical June weather in the meseta (this flat stretch of the Camino). And very little hills!

      Calzaldilla de los Hermanillos

      11 oktober 2023, Spanien ⋅ 🌙 48 °F

Today we met an exciting milestone! We passed through Sahagún which is the unofficial midway point of the Camino Francés. So the actual mileage estimates are kind of varied for the Camino but most folks say it’s about 790 km (485 miles) long. Any distance marker of less than 395 km to Santiago means you’re on the “downhill side,” the second half. All of the distance markers were less than 395 km today! We’re having a great time but there’s something about seeing that we’ve made it more than half way to Santiago that really elevates the spirits!

I don’t know how great the pictures are today as we were on a very flat section of Camino. It was allegedly 27 km from Ledigos where we woke up today to Calzadilla de Los Hermanillos. However, it was actually closer to 34 km! That’s over 21 miles! We were hungry in the town before Calzadilla de los Hermanos and the only thing open was a little mini store where
the very nice lady made us a bocadillo (baguette sandwich) with ham and cheese on it. She was very friendly and we chatted a bit and I asked “So we must be pretty close to Calzadilla de los Hermanillos now, right?” And she said no, it’s 9 more kilometers straight out of town. So after we ate our lunch at a cute little park with a pond full of jumping frogs, we started the walk out of town. We didn’t see another soul on foot, in a car, or even in a tractor for over 6 miles. We started to say that maybe this is what it feels like to be
The last two living people on the planet! The Camino splits in two a ways back and I guess most pilgrims went the other way because no other pilgrims were out on the Camino with us and although we later met two lovely Australian women at dinner, it seemed like we were the only guests at the casa rural where we are staying tonight. So odd after having dinner with about 40 other pilgrims last night and seeing them all on the first few hours of the Camino today!

Tomorrow we are walking 23 km to Mansilla de las Mulas, our last destination in La Meseta, the section of agricultural plains. We’ll miss the Meseta! It’s quiet and lovely and so pretty! We’ll be walking into the biggest city on our Camino, León, the day after tomorrow.

David’s back is improving quite a bit. No tilt and he doesn’t have much pain. He’s anxious to “do his part” carrying stuff but hopefully he can rest it a few more days!

      Carrion de los Condes

      26 juni 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

From Leon we chose to backtrack to Carrion de los Condes in order to stay at the Albergue Santa Maria which is known for its singing nuns.

Got there just in time, enjoyed a small “concert” along with about 20 other pilgrims, who all participated in singing and sharing.

Afterwards I attended mass and received a pilgrim’s blessing (hands on head), very special.

And after mass we joined a small group of fellow pilgrims, many of whom we’ve encountered multiple times—including the Colemans and Sean’s friend Brandon. And in walked Lucas and Maria from Brazil! What a joy!

Sean had the pilgrim menu and his first course was enough spaghetti for a regular dinner! I went a la carte and enjoyed grilled octopus—a specialty in this region. A big enough group that it was impossible to hear everything going on, but still one of our favorite meals on the Camino!

      Onward

      23 juni 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

On the Camino we frequently see yellow arrows marking the way. Sometimes fellow pilgrims take the time to build stones or sticks into arrows, too.

I find it heartwarming. Sometimes it is just the thing we need: a nudge of encouragement. Keep going!Läs mer

      Bercianos del Real Camino

      5 maj, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

I’m halfway done!!! There is more Camino behind me than in front of me. Shortly after the halfway point rain started pouring on me and I had a very wet last 8km or so. My albergue tonight is teeny tiny and I’m feeling ready to arrive in León in a couple of days.Läs mer

      Terradillos to Bercianos

      8 september 2023, Spanien ⋅ 🌙 61 °F

Left for Bercianos at approximately 8 AM. 25 km's. Passed through Sahagun

ceremoniously is said to be the halfway point. Thank goodness for real time. I am way past half. The albergue is run by the church. Very tight but very clean 4 bunk rooms. Visited the church. Walked past a car, the model name was Zoe... Will send the picture to my granddaughter. Met a young African living in Spain. Originally from Cameroon. He and I had made eye contact a few times in the past. He was so happy each time he saw me. He asked me my name and would clap, showing appreciation. What was so remarkable is that he slept on a sleeping mat next to the trails each night. At the stop, where we took the photos, he asked if I wanted a short video. He gave me a small stone. He was collecting rocks along the way. Very nice young man.Läs mer

      Meseta espagnole à 100 %

      20 maj 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

      Buen Camino

    • Carrión de los Condes to Ledigos

      4 oktober 2022, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

With about 23km to cover today we rose early and walked out of Carrión by head torch a little after 7:00. It was pleasant walking in the cool 8 degrees C in the cloudless pre-dawn.

It wasn’t long before an issue John had experienced yesterday returned: an increasing involuntary lean to the left and slight muscle weakness. After 16km he called it a day at Calzadilla de La Cueza and caught a taxi to our albergue in Ledigos. Kevin walked the final few kilometers. The problem is almost certainly dehydration which will be easily fixed but some expert advice in Sahagún tomorrow should help.

One of the pleasures of the Camino is meeting and chatting with people from all over the world and encountering them again and again further along the Way. We are fortunate that the common language among the pilgrims is English. It is not commonly spoken by the Spanish people but they are very forgiving of our efforts.

The Meseta from Burgos to Leon (about 180km) is renowned for challenging pilgrims with its never ending featureless landscape. It is Spain’s wheat bowl with 40C+ temperatures in the summer. We found it less featureless and more interesting than some of the wheat growing areas of Australia. However the ever constant sun, even in the autumn has been wearing.

Ledigo from Carrión de los Condes

      23 juni 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

We passed up an albergue (hostel) with a pool today. Sigh. I'd really like to take a swim at some point soon but between rain, out of service signs, and other requirements it hasn't materialized yet. The hope is alive.

Albergue La Morena in Ledigos was our destination because I had a zoom meeting set up and needed a quiet space w WiFi. The upside is that I enjoyed a very nice bed in an attractive room, a tasty meal, and the company of good people.... Even if no swimmies.

Temps are climbing. Afternoons are rapidly becoming uncomfortable for walking so we are looking towards an earlier start.

Oh! Also I have my first foot woe. Not a blister (yet?) But getting a hot spot on my right heel. I've been luckier than most to go this long without issue and I jumped right on it with a change of socks and some tape to pad. Hopefully tomorrow will show signs of improvement.

Camino Day 19: Carrión to Ledigos

      30 augusti 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

      Total Distance: 23.9km
      Step Count: 35k
      Blisters to date: 2
      Tortillas to date: 18
      Injuries to date: shin splints

The morning started off with a beautiful surprise delivered by the volunteers of the Albergue. I received a song, a reading from a verses from a specific part of the gospel and a book from the nuns for my journey 📚

I was overwhelmed from all the socialising the night before so I walked alone and just listened to music. My shin splints also kicked in yesterday and the music helped to distract from the pain. I also called my fam and we talked for like an hour, it’d been a while 🙃

Leaving Carrion early in the morning was quite beautiful but the stretch from Carrion to Calzadilla de las Cuezas was 17km all straight with not much along the way except for a food truck.

By the time we got to Calzadilla, I still had a few more kms in me to make the next day shorter. However, the path from here was by the road so I took a lil detour where I enjoyed some solitude and lots of sunflower fields before arriving to Ledigos where there was an albergue with a pool awaiting!

I spent the best afternoon here: chillin, journaling and then taking in the super blue moon 🌚
