Day 2 - Monasterie de Urdax

The last few kms into Urdax were ‘tranquille’. When we arrived at the monastery there was a phone number to call. Javi arrived a few minutes later and welcomed us.

The monastery was originally built as a pilgrims’ hospital in the 11 th century - more than a thousand years later it houses a museum, a permanent exhibition of Basque painting and a pilgrims’ albergue. The albergue is above the cloisters. What a treat.

We are the only two staying here tonight. Javi brought us dinner (cena) at 7 - very tasty - and will return with breakfast (desayuno) at 7 tomorrow. We have a big climb first up. Hope we’re up to it.Read more

Crossed the border into Spain, the weather is still pretty awful which made crossing the mountains a lot of fun (to say the least). Nice little aire on the border crossing with lots of shops. Amazing the difference in price of things here compared to France which we can see from the window.
Time for some retail therapy before chilling out for the evening and deciding where to next.Read more

Day 3
Break in Urdax

We are back in Spain, having had a beautiful morning walk. This is a monastery town, with a lovely stream running through it. Just a few drizzles, nothing terrible. One of those days with gorgeous views in every direction. We've gone through a couple of little Basque towns.

Nuala and I decided to try to find an off-road route for a while and did pretty well for the first 20 minutes or so. But then we must have gotten turned around, because the forestry workers we went to ask for directions spoke to us in French, and by our calculations we should have arrived in Spain! No harm done, we were in a lovely woods, and we were soon back on track. We have joined up with the other more sensible three who stuck with the route, and are eating a meal in a little café here in town. About 10 more kilometers from Urdax to our day's destination.Read more
