A real gorgeous little paradise in the middle of desert. This place accommodated us extremely well having arrived totally covered in red dust and mud. They sent us off to the car wash to get cleaned up before the red stuff settled into the paintwork of the caravan so good advice.En savoir plus

Darling in Partial Flood

Unfortunately, there was a lot of things we couldn’t do in Bourke because the Darling River is in partial flood because of all the Queensland rains that are working their way south at the moment. We still managed to get a look at some of the stuff around town.

Another bad downer was the fact that the paddle steamer wasn’t working because of the flood so we missed out on a paddle boat ride.En savoir plus

Amazing River History of Bourke

When you get far out west like this and find the history of these areas and the struggles the people had, it really hits home and you understand the strength of the Australian spirit. Bourke grew to be the largest inland port in the world with the steamers coming up the Murray and Darling rivers up here to Bourke, with a huge port where three massive loading docks were here to load the wool bales on, and then head them down the river to Adelaide for shipment around the world.En savoir plus

The Sad Side of Bourke

These two pictures show the sad side of Burke with shopfronts having garage doors closed over all the windows so they can’t have them smashed by certain people. Even going into the bottle shop at the IGA here and you’re not allowed to walk around the bottle shop. You have to stand behind a heavy Perspex wall. Ask for what you want they go and fetch it for you.
It’s even ironic when you see the police station building here that has bars on it to keep people from breaking into it how weird. What stupid person would attempt to break into a police station.En savoir plus

Country Bush Pub Surprise

Strode up to the old Northy in North Bourke for a coldly to find two lovely ladies that have been out for a ride decided they needed some refreshment to cool off for a drink so just rode into the pub, welcomed with open arms.En savoir plus

Rock Holes - Byrock

Took a drive out to Byrock to check out the Rock Holes, Huge sections of granite rock worn away by water over millions of years. After rains the locals would live by these as the rock held the water for a long amount of time.En savoir plus

Mulga Creek Pub

Definitely remote this pub has been around for over 100 years. Back in the old days the average trek cattle or sheep could in a day was around 18-20miles. So back then there were many droving routes that had a tavern or inn located about every 20miles or so, many of which today no longer exist. These catered for the overnighting of the drovers.En savoir plus

We have a special trip here to come and see the muddy waters coffee shop and cafe gallery. All the fancy artwork but unfortunately it turned out to be closed for Easter. What a bummer.

Incredibly so much of absolutely nothing out here, as flat as the eye can see. Unusually green though after the first lot of floods a few weeks ago.

1st Shaft Lookout

This was the 1st shaft dropped in the area for opal discovery back in 1902. Just 120 years later and men still get bitten by Opal Fever and spend their lives in search of the mother load. Many never find more than small change.

Sunset at 1st Shaft Lookout

Having a couple of nice juicy quiet ones at the bar and Grill waiting for the fireworks to come at 8:30 and they’re right across the road so we don’t have to walk too far.

Easter Fireworks Lightning Ridge

None of these pictures or videos are going to do justice to the show that was put on here at Lightning Ridge. It’s one of the most amazing fireworks shows I’ve ever seen in a small country town. It went for 15 minutes, even though there were three massive explosions of fireworks that probably were meant to go off as individual explosions but a few fireballs worked out okay.En savoir plus

Walk in Mine Tour

This is the easiest of the mines to do as it’s a simple walk in and self guided tour, just read all the notices and stuff that are through the mine as you move.

The one big problem is you need to be about 5 foot 6 inches so you don’t bash your head on the roof of the mine all the timeEn savoir plus

I just cannot comprehend how these people in these Opal fields do live. Everything out here from homes, if you can call them that, are put together with scraps they can find. Has been a big day doing the round Robin circuit of the Opal district country pubs, if you can call them pubs whatever they are Tavern‘s, Inns, Lean to’s, well back at the resort Sue‘s taking a bit of a nap so I thought I’d stroll up to the Nobbies Bar and Grill and have a quick refreshment. This is the guided mine tour of the chambers of the black hand mine. We did this tour first before we went into the sculpture tunnels and it was interesting to find out how they search for Opal.
