  • Another Harvest Host Winery

    May 28, 2022 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

After Nashville’s debacle we just left town and headed towards Knoxville TN. Found this lovely Harvey host winery that were great hosts. Wines were nothing to rave about as we are spoiled in Australia, especially with our reds. The boldest thing they had was probably similar to our Merlot’s. Anyway, had s as great night and chatted with some fellow travellers that also turned out to be Penn State Alumni. Small world. The pic is the beautiful Charcuterie they prepared for us to enjoy with our wines.Read more

  • Harriman TN

    May 29, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

They have great signage along the Interstates letting you know things are coming up at the next exits. Things like historical little townships off the side of the highways. Great to meet the locals and have a chat.
The little town Harriman had a supposed historic flea market until we arrived to what used to be a Walmart, and Walmart had moved out of town. Have no idea what the historic meant. 😂
While the girls shopped I stopped in at the one and only local bar and and was the only one there. Was met with the usual. “Oh My Gawd, where would yawl be from, just love that accent, could listen to it all day long“. Sounded strange from the backwoods of Tennessee people. 😂

  • KOA Smoky Mountains

    May 29, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Another great KOA campground. KOA are renowned for having tremendous facilities, especially for kids. Their campgrounds have everything and beautifully maintained.
Unfortunately if you were travelling full time for a long period the cost of them would be too great. This one was $54 USD for the night, but it is a long weekend over here.Read more

  • Biltmore Estate, Ashville NC

    May 30, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

The country cottage estate of the Vanderbilts. Can’t imagine the size of this until you physically see it for real and experience it. It’s actually bigger than their Rhode Island home which is also humungous. Built in the late 1800’s by the grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, George.
The grandchildren of Cornelius all built massive mansions, in New York, Rhode Island. In fact they built 10 along 5th Ave Manhattan, but now all succumbed to the high rises.

  • Biltmore Mansion

    May 30, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Snaps from inside the mansion. Still furnished as it was lived in at the time of George Washington Vanderbilt. 1895-1914.
His grandfather Cornelius built the empire, his father William doubled the empire, and George and his siblings spent the empire. So typical.Read more

  • Old Murrays Mill, Catawba NC

    May 30, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Another great Harvest Host location. Even though they're closed today for the Memorial Day weekend they still contacted us and gave the directions on where to park up. Another old 1800’s mill that is still in working order which they run once a month for the public to see it working. Driven from a man made dam through the waterwheel.
We had a beautiful site up on the hill looking down towards the mill.

  • Bunker Hill covered Bridge

    May 31, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Almost the last of the 300 covered bridges built throughout the North Carolina area. Fantastic to see although the modern free youth of today respect their history with paint cans and filthy graffiti.
Doug: The primary reason for covering the bridges was to protect the Timbers from the weather. Sun, rain and snow would deteriorate the timber faster and only get 20 years maybe, but covered they would last 100 years or more. This is why it was so common in the northern states.
A secondary benefit was the roof integrated into the structure made the structure stronger and could support more weight.

  • Blue Ridge Parkway VA

    May 31, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Taking the famous Blue Ridge Parkway turned out be a little disappointing. We were expecting lots of stunning views and the winding road, alas the road was so heavily forested that over 90 miles we had less than a handful of views to snap. We were restricted by the size of our RV as to which sections of the Parkway we could actually do due the height of tunnels etc.
the southern end in the Smoky Mountains had 22 tunnels and probably the most elaborate views.
However we did get some great shots that Sue and Bec took from the few spots we could see.

  • KOA Natural Bridge. VA

    June 1, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Another great KOA campground with everything and now a breakfast at IHOP. We tried to do a diner breakfast at the Pink Cadillac Diner but alas, we were 10 minutes late for the breakfast menu so that’s why we ended up at IHOP.
But IHOP do specialise in great breakfast made for Lumberjacks. Better be hungry.

  • Shenandoah Valley Campgound VA

    June 1, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Lovely site here on the Shenandoah River near Verona in Virginia.
Having a couple of days here as our wind down to the trip before heading back to State College and dropping Bec off.
The plan tomorrow is Luray Caverns and then Skyline Drive across the Appalachian’s.Read more

  • Shenandoah Valley Storm

    June 2, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Day 2 at Shenandoah and all our phones were buzzing sirens with severe storm warnings coming through. When they hit, they hit, and man it was like being back home in Qld. Torrential, huge winds and large hail. Check out the videos.Read more

  • Luray Caverns, VA

    June 3, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

What a stunning place. The 2nd largest cavern system in the USA discovered back in 1837 by surveyors.
When they dropped down into the cavern and lit their lanterns they were simply blown away with what laid before them.
We travelled 1.4 miles through the caverns with some massive monuments. Way too many photos taken to show here, and the photos cannot do it justice. It was simply stunning.
We are going to produce 1 specialty video highlighting all of the Luray Caverns and post it to our Facebook or our new Walkabout Aus YouTube when it launches.

  • Antique Car & Carriage Museum. VA

    June 3, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

I have never seen such a totally awesome collection of early automotive history cars, starting from carriages to the first horseless carriages and then the early days of automobiles. For a car enthusiast this was an absolute pleasure to come across this place.Read more

  • Shenandoah Heritage Village

    June 3, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

A true history of the Shenandoah Valley at this site and they have done a great job saving a lot of these buildings, some on their original location and some relocated from surrounding properties. Some of the buildings came from General Robert E Lee’s own plantation in Virginia.Read more

  • Skyline Drive VA

    June 3, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We figured after our disaster of a drive through the Blue Ridge Parkway we would try again with Skyline Drive. We were still restricted to which sections we could do due to our height, but we’re fortunate to get on about 1 mile north of a tunnel that would have stopped us. Only got about 32 miles of the Skyline and we were not disappointed. Again as with the Caverns the photos cannot do justice to the expansive views across the Shenandoah Valley from these view points. Zooming in on some of these pics will highlight what I mean. Shame we had a hazy day, as the views would have been even more stunning on a clear day.Read more

Our last campground hookup before heading back to State College to help Bec pack up her stuff. We leave there on Tuesday and she leaves Wednesday for Summer Camp at Lake Bryn Mawr near Honesdale PA.
Lovely park to top off a very busy day.

  • State College. PA

    June 4, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Well that’s it for us as a family. Finally back at State College to drop Bec off and assist her with sorting and packing for the next chapter in her amazing life.
Noticed a problem after the massive storm we copped at Shenandoah. After the big hail and a crash from something hitting the roof we thought we came off ok. Today I spotted the smashed aircon cover on the rear. Well that will be interesting when we take it back on Tuesday. About $180 to replace so we’ll see what happens.

Update: Greg was so impressed with how we took care of his rig, and doing al the fixups he graciously said not top worry about the aircon cover.

  • Final Preparations

    June 5, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

It’s so close now to the end of our RV Trip. Staying at a Walmart carpark tonight which is great to save a few bucks, but understanding that you never know what surrounds you socially.
Pretty safe in a place like State college.
See Sue in the pics doing final cleaning and packing up some good items we will be disposing of.

Will discuss her potential future options in another footprint.

  • Atlantic City Boardwalk. NJ

    June 7, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Our last destination before heading to New York and flying home. We decided we would lash out and do Atlantic City as neither of us had been here before and fell in love with it after watching the TV series Boardwalk a few years back. Was a great show of the creation of Atlantic City in the bootlegging days of prohibition. Well worth watching, might even do it again ourselves.Read more

  • Atlantic City NJ

    June 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

After a great sleep in the massive king size bed we rise for breakfast and doing some driving around AC.
Near the boardwalk is really run down and dilapidated with the old buildings and many demolished vacant sites, obviously waiting for the right time to build the next massive casino. Pretty disappointing to see, all in the name if progress.
Away from the centre though, it is pretty nice, properties averaging 1.5m.

  • Ocean City NJ

    June 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

After a good tip from a friend we decided to head down to Ocean City to check it out.
Found the closest thing to a real coffee at the pic shown, “Ocean City Coffee Company”.
Verdict: just so-so, in America they just can’t make a latte without burning the milk.
Tipped off Ocean City was a pretty place.
Verdict: absolutely beautiful. Where Atlantic City is the Vegas of the East Coast, Ocean City is the family resort destination. Much more beautifully kept and have maintained their historical architecture. Atlantic City is just a concrete jungle and once you leave the boardwalk it is in dire need of repair and maintenance.

  • Time for a Guinness

    June 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

After a long day walking the boardwalks at both Ocean City and Atlantic City we decided to close out the day with a trip on the Steel Pier Ferris Wheel and then to the Irish Pub and finally, an ice cold Guinness.
We’ve done ice creams, and the famous Crab Fries, see the video. At the Irish Pub we finally decided to have Crab Cakes and were not disappointed.
Don’t know how many miles we’ve walked but done wonders for me as you can see in my pic attached.
