    Cawdor Castle (Guest writer)

    2019年5月30日, スコットランド ⋅ 🌧 8 °C

There is really no shortages of castles in England or Scotland. All you have to do is search around your destination and voila there’s a castle or palace. Cawdor Castle was a little gem we found on the way from Culloden to Loch Ness. The original structure dates back to the 1300’s, and is the first castle we’ve seen that still has a drawbridge, pretty neat! The Dowager Countess Cawdor still lives there in the wintertime, but during the summer months she opens it up to tourists. We overheard one of the tour guides talking about her being away in the summer, but back in the winter and we asked about her husband. The 6th Earl Cawdor, Hugh Campbell, died in 1993 and left behind 5 children from his first marriage as well as his 2nd wife Angelica Campbell, Countess Cawdor. If we’ve learned anything from our time in the UK, it’s that they take their peerage system seriously. Something about the way the tour guide hesitated when asked about the 7th Earl stuck out so we googled it when we got to our next stop. Glad we did, there was a bit of a scandal! Once the 6th Earl Cawdor dies, the Countess becomes a Dowager Countess (widow), and his eldest son becomes the 7th Earl Cawdor. Nothing unusual here except when he passed, 6th Earl Cawdor caused controversy by leaving the ancestral home to the Dowager Countess vs his heir, 7th Earl Cawdor, Colin Campbell- WOW! She’s been living in the castle since 1993, and in the summer of 2002 while the Dowager Countess was on holiday in the US, 7th Earl Cawdor up and moved his wife and 4 children into the castle. A lawsuit ensued and a court ordered that the earl and his family had to move back to their mansion, also on the castles property. Talk about awkward.
The castle is very, very old with a legit dungeon, tons of cool places for kids to hide and amazing gardens and grounds. Only thing that wasn’t impressive was the “new” kitchen, only recently upgraded in 1938. When the cook was told she was getting the expensive upgrade, she quit on the spot!

Yet another off the beaten path place we all got to experience this trip.

    Cawdor Golf course!

    2019年5月30日, スコットランド ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

So, seeing this golf course up close - since I missed St Andrews, I had to get some pictures for my buddy David. Some day, I’d love to do a golf trip over here to play a few rounds. I saw the board outside the castle and thought it might be a good place for us to start! It really is amazing how different, but alike our worlds can be. I love traveling and experience all these cultures have to share and looking at life in a whole other light. When you have a golf course on every other street corner, you become a little numb to it. When you don’t have nearly as many or access to them, even the little ones can be a little piece of heaven!もっと詳しく

    Loch Ness

    2019年5月30日, スコットランド ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

Well, check another one off KK’s list. We made it to Loch Ness, and Taylor actually did a little momento hunting for a younger Stalheim. Specifically someone who like rocks and red ones at that! We spent the day doing a lot of driving after Culloden and Cawdor Castle, but it’s been a great journey. As we made our way along Loch Ness, Tay searched fervently for some sign of Nessie. She managed to spot a boat, a bird, maybe a wave and a shadow, but after a few moments, was eventually able to rule them all out as Nessie! (C’mon Tay, I dare you to leave a comment!). I know Denise feels like we should have already found Nessie if she was there, but the fact this lake is so long and so deep and there is really only a little civilization on it or around it, who knows. Sometimes it’s fun to believe in those little things!!!もっと詳しく

There she is, show her a place to hike and she is gone!We made it all together! The highlands outside Glencoe! I love this place!!No words1Would love to come hike here! This is how I imagine the highlands!

    The highlands near Glencoe

    2019年5月30日, スコットランド ⋅ 🌫 11 °C

So, this is the road where I remember traveling with Gamma, Doc, Nana, and ‘Andaddy after graduating Duke and we saw this lone bagpiper on the side of the road. There were no cars on the road or by the roadside, yet, he was playing as if he had a grand audience. I remember the start scenery and how secluded everything was. Well, we weren’t originally planning to come this way, but as we couldn’t settle on next steps and since it was raining, I pushed for the long drive along Loch Ness and the for the pass at Glencoe! I think, once we got there, everyone was glad we made it. There were definitely some sketchy moments on the road and Denise was a little worked up, but I was so glad we took the time to come this way. If you ever get here, there just aren’t a lot of places like this - at least that I’ve seen - and it takes your breath away a little. It’s definitely a place, like the Lake District, where I could come back and spend some time hiking and exploring. It’s a long trek out this way, but if you have the time, I think it’s worth it!もっと詳しく

Good thing KK went to sleep!

    2019年5月30日, スコットランド ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

So, it was a good thing KK went to sleep! She took some Dramamine as she knew today could get curvy, and she fell asleep at the perfect time. We took a secondary road to avoid some really bad construction traffic. Yeah, that was interesting. We had eight mile of a one lane, yes, one lane road with two way traffic. We had some turnouts we could use which helped. Doc, thanks for teaching me to drive on those one lane gravel mountain roads! It came in handy, and KK sleeping kept the back of my head from getting sprayed with lunch!!! It was fun for me, very stressful for Denise and the girls, apparently they had pleasant lullaby’s! Woohoo!!!もっと詳しく

    TIMBERRRRR!!!

    2019年6月2日, イングランド ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Today started out as a great day! After saying our goodbyes at the airport we walked out into the sun to our freedom... and boy did it feel good! After extensively preparing for my new job as “the adult”, I knew exactly how to get from the airport to our hotel. We found a spot to stand against the wall on the crowded tube, and we were finally on our way to enjoying a couple days in London. After almost a week of cold and rain, the sun seemed like a blessing and I couldn’t wait to trade my leggings and coat for some shorts and a T-shirt. As we came to a stop halfway through our journey into the city, I couldn’t contain my excitement! As I turned to tell Taylor another story about my time studying in London, WHAM! She fainted. Face first. Straight onto the floor of the overcrowded tube. I’d love to say that the kind souls of London were quick to lend a helping hand, but alas they proved to be the bastards that the American colonists claimed they were and just stared at the two of us. One passed out on the floor and the other desperately looking around and loudly, somewhat calmly, asking for help and a doctor. Ironically, the first person to come over wasn’t even English, but a Spanish woman traveling with friends whom I had been eavesdropping on trying to test how much Spanish I actually learned this last semester. A second lady from the other end of the car ran up behind her and sat down with Taylor. She checked on and comforted her while I tried to get the attention of a staff member from the station. While we were getting yelled at by the conductor for blocking the doors of the train, we finally got in contact with the station workers. They held Taylor up and helped us off the tube and into some cool fresh air. The station workers kindly brought us some water and stayed with us until Taylor assured them she was fine. After asking her how she was and how she felt, I held my breath waiting for what was sure to be a response of “I want to go home”, but she looked at me with the faintest (no pun intended) sign of a smirk and said “you didn’t tell my mom did you?”. Shaking my head and releasing a sob of relief I sat down next to her. After I was satisfied that I had exhausted all of my first aid medical knowledge, we stayed on the bench and cried (me) and laughed (Taylor) about our first hour in London. Thirty minutes later we were back on the tube and headed to the safety of our hotel. Surprisingly, all of our luggage, passports, and money made it with us. Minus Taylor’s broken glasses that is...... oops! Sorry Denise!
