  • Lake McDonald Boat Tour

    After our hike, we decided to relax while taking a boat tour of Lake McDonald. A park ranger joined our group, offering historical and noteworthy information about the Lake and Park. While on the Lake, remnants of the Roberts Wildfire could be seen, as well as local mountain peaks.Read more

  • East Side of Glacier

    Before leaving the Park, we decided to see the sights on its east side. Like Waterton Lakes, the abrupt transition of prairie to mountain is a dominant feature here.

  • Jackson Glacier Overlook

    Entering through St. Mary, we traveled on the east side of Going-to-the-Sun Road as far as the Jackson Glacier Overlook. Since 1966, the Glacier has experienced a significant decrease in size. In fact, since its founding in 1910, Glacier National Park has lost more than 70 glaciers. Current predictions estimate that the Park's remaining 25 glaciers will be gone by 2030.

    Under the Overlook is a horse tunnel. When the Road was completed in 1932, many visitors opted to traverse the Park on horseback. This tunnel provided a safe route for pack horses to travel, free from vehicular traffic.

  • Roadside Viewing

    Along the Road are several pullouts allowing travelers an opportunity to stop and view prominent features along the roadway. Included among the sights were remnants of the 2015 Reynolds Creek Wildfire.Read more

  • St. Mary Lake (1 of 2)

    As we made our way back to St. Mary, we drove passed St. Mary Lake. The Lake is the second largest lake in the Park. It's most notable as the setting for the opening scene of "The Shining". Goose Island can be seen in the middle of the Lake.Read more

  • Blackfeet Indian Reservation

    After leaving the Park, we traveled through the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. A roadside exhibit provides information about the culture and traditions of the tribe. Geologic stratification is a prominent feature of the mountain peaks in this area.Read more

  • Wildlife

    In addition to the Buttes, wildlife are also prominent within the Park, Three separate prairie dog "Towns" line the Park's scenic drive, which also provides ample viewing opportunities of the Park's resident bison.Read more

  • Scenic Loop Drive

    A 36-mile loop drive traverses the Park, allowing closer views of the roadside landscape. Although part of the road was closed due to deterioration, we had plenty of other viewing opportunities along the open portion of the drive.Read more

  • Boicourt Overlook

    From Boicourt Overlook, we could see the Little Missouri Badlands, the most notable landform in North Dakota. From here, we passed a few more roadside features, before continuing on our way out of the Park and towards home.Read more
