Long Trail

    28 septembre 2016, États Unis ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Just passing through with an overnight stay. Lot of confusion about the distance to the Inn, but it is now apparent it will be a 14 mile day. The terrain has eased up a lot, so it shouldn't be that bad. Killington is after the Inn, so I'll be able to climb that with Nick, yet again. We've climbed it many times on Spartan Races. Looking forward to a beer, then maybe a shower right after. Priorities.En savoir plus

  • Inn at the Long Trail

    29 septembre 2016, États Unis ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

It's an oasis. I haven't been off the trail for a couple of weeks, since the B&B in Jeffersonville, and a quick resupply stop in Waitsfield. I pushed longer daily miles and got here a day ahead of schedule. Glad I did. Lots of good food that I needed, and a good rest. Nick is on his way. I'll see him in a few hours. Ken and Muriel also. First thing even before a shower... Beer, Irish whiskey, and Guinness Stew.En savoir plus

  • Killington Peak

    30 septembre 2016, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

Nick and I were on the top of Killington at around noon. Real easy climb. We heard a humming noise coming from behind the woods a bit downhill. We checked it out to find the K1 gondola running. I guess it is for the mountain bikers. We hopped on for a spin. The top of Killington is loaded with antennas. View was OK. I was well rested from my zero day (no miles) at the Inn. Ken and Muriel showed up at around 5pm, and we took a ride into Rutland to pick up some food we need to get us to Manchester. Back at the Inn we had dinner (Ken paid, thanks), and finished it off with a nice Irish Whiskey. Had breakfast, and we were hiking at around 9am. Short day...10 miles, and easy.En savoir plus

  • Lost Pond Shelter

    2 octobre 2016, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

I know, just another shelter. They all look the same down south. This one has the notoriety of being at mile 201. I just past 200 a mile back. We got here just as the light rain started. Not cold at all. Getting extra rest, because there will be some climbing tomorrow. We go to the top of Bromley Mountain. Hope we get some views.En savoir plus

  • Bromley Mountain

    4 octobre 2016, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Top of a ski mountain. We easily made it to this warming hut. Good thing, because it rained all night. Was hoping for a nice sunrise, but got fog instead. We're warm and dry, so I'm not complaining. Headed to Manchester, where Nick will leave me. I'll stay overnight there, then continue to the end. I think 4 days or so. Weather report is real good for the next few days. Until then, headed out into the rain, mostly downhill.En savoir plus

  • Bob's Diner

    5 octobre 2016, États Unis ⋅ 🌫 8 °C

It's 6:15, and I am standing outside Bob's Diner waiting for the waitress to show up. Got to get a big breakfast, because I have to climb uphill for 3 miles to get back to the LT. I stayed at a motel in Manchester last night, because Nick left, and he had some food in his truck that I needed to finish the hike.En savoir plus

  • Kelly Stand Road

    5 octobre 2016, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

I stealth camped just before the USFS road to Arlington. It's still another 4 miles to the next shelter and it is 4:30pm. I hiked 12 LT miles and 3 miles from Manchester. 15 miles is a good day, especially after going over Stratton. The miles roll by quickly in this easier terrain. I took my heavier sleeping bag from Nick, so I'll be plenty warm.En savoir plus

  • Glastenbury Mountain

    6 octobre 2016, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

I was being very ambitious thinking I would hike 21 miles today. I got moving at 7am, as soon as the daylight permitted. I based that decision on the trail conditions from the day before. Completely different day. Rocks, roots, and mud all the way. I still got 13 miles done. Just passed another fire tower. I've been lucky with towers. All of them have been on clear days.En savoir plus

  • Congdon Shelter

    7 octobre 2016, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

This is it, my last night on the trail. Tomorrow I hike 10 miles to the Mass Border, then backwards to meet Neal at a trailhead parking lot. That's about 3 miles. There are no big hills or highways to cross. Hope it isn't to rocky or muddy. I hiked 14 miles today to get here. I'm tired, but there will be rest after tomorrow. I'm staying at Neal's camp in Arlington, VT until Monday.En savoir plus

  • The Finish Line

    8 octobre 2016, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

You see that line on the map? That's it! I was sure I would make it, but it feels real good to get here. I have a leisurely 3 miles back to meet Neal, then I will sit for two days before coming home.

  • Neal's Camp

    9 octobre 2016, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Neal picked me up from a random dirt road 3 miles from the finish. I had to walk down it about a mile, because only ATV's could get up it. On the way there were a couple of guys hanging by their ATV's. I stopped to talk and drank a beer with them. When someone offers a beer, I don't hesitate. Soon enough I saw Neal's truck. Welcome sight. A warm seat and a cooler with Long Trail Ale. I had a pleasant drive to the camp. I've been eating since I got here. Out of controlEn savoir plus
