    Our first day of steady rain

    It has been a month of walking, this afternoon was the first day we walked under a steady rain. And windy, as we walked over the top of several low hills in the valley.

    Not a lot of pictures, especially towards the end of the walk. But we made it, tired and damp!En savoir plus

    Walking up the Rio Valcarce valley

    Just short of 10k walking this morning, to the village of Trabadelo. A gentle uphill along the Rio Valcarce, which runs through a steep walled narrow valley. It reminds be of a New England notch!

    Blue skies above us early, but lots of fog below the peaks!

    We had a line up of cats in one village.

    Adios Villafranca!

    Villafranca could easily have been one of my favorite towns so far. Yesterday afternoon when we arrived it was raining too hard to explore much. However, this morning as we walked out of town we saw how beautiful it was with the mist hanging over the hills. Caught a quick Pilgrim blessing in the church as we left town.En savoir plus

    10+ km to Las Herrerias

    Finished our day's walking to this village at the foot of tomorrow's climb up a mountain.

    We stayed mostly dry today, a couple of sprinkles late morning, then a light rain right before we arrived at our Casa Rural for the night.En savoir plus

    We have crossed the border into Galicia, and are have some Galician soup to warm up after a wet and chilly ascent to this mountain ridge top village!

    We met Rex and Kara Roundtree, a couple whose Facebook blog I have been following of their Camino trip. I recognized Rex as I passed him on the steep trail to La Fans and we all had coffee/tea together.

    Trying to steel ourselves for another 12k this afternoon!

    Rocky Mountain High in the Wind & Rain!

    So...we climbed a mountain today & entered our final region of this Camino! It was pretty cool to see horses bring some of the Pilgrims up the mountain ahead of us. The trail up was very wet, muddy & rocky. Taking a horse ride up is a good option if you are worried about slipping.

    We are showered & dry, sitting in front of the warm wood stove in our casa rural as the wind howls outside.    En savoir plus

    Taxi from Linares to Fonfria

    We bravely walked another 3.3 kms and the heavens opened up, the wind blew insanely hard along the ridge top, and there was sleet (just over 4000 feet at that point).

    When we reached the next village, we took refuge in a little market / café. We ordered hot coffee and used Google translate to ask the woman working if she could call us a taxi to our destination town, still 9k away.

    Samos

    We continued our walk down the Mountain to the town of Tricastela, then followed down the Rio Obibio, until we reached the small village of Samos. Samos has a huge Benedictine Monastery. I have a few shots here of the Monetary from up the hill and in town. Sue will have interior shots in her post.

    Shadows & Sunshine on the Way to Samos

    We had sun today for the first time in over a week!

    Our trek today was pretty nice as alot of it was on a woodland path through woods & along streams. We've had rain for an extended time so the streams are pretty high.

    Going through lots of tiny villages, we saw many chestnut trees on a hillside that had large fabric nets under the trees to collect the chestnuts that drop.

    Late this afternoon we took a tour of the Benedictine Monestary of Samos. The tour was in Spanish. My Google Translate App couldn't keep up with tour, so I turned it off & took pics of the beautiful murals on the walls.    En savoir plus

    Through Hamlets & Woodlands to Sarria

    What a gift today's weather has been! Wore shorts & a t-shirt for the first time in a couple of weeks. Sunshine & blue sky was with us through our mostly woodland, rolling-hill walk to Sarria. There were several times we had to break out the rain ponchos for brief sprinkles, but then the sun returned. The temps were in the high 60's for most of the day.
    Saw a farmer harvesting chestnuts with a cool rake, he posed for me. Saw lots of gardens with pumpkins & squash. Many farms with goats & chickens. There was a pretty unusual black-headed, white body goat we took a pic of. Also, got treated to 2 pretty cool rainbows!    En savoir plus

    Through Sarria and onto Velei

    Today was the first day our cell coverage was non-existent for more of the day. Even where we ate lunch in Sarria, coverage was spotty.

    We walked about 18 k today, most of it along the Rio Sarria, through a remote, agricultural valley, on windy trail and empty country roads.

    We had a steep walk to the top of the hill in Sarria, where we had a quick lunch, at an outside table on a sunny plaza, until a fast moving rain storm blew through town. The waiter and bartender quickly help everybody move indoors. The bartender said something like "Welcome to Galicia" and shrugged his shoulders

    We walked onto the hamlet of Velei. We have 110 kilometers to go to Santiago.    En savoir plus

    Past 100k marker & Portomarin

    Not a lot of photos, as it rained almost all of our afternoon rain, sometimes heavily

    We passed the 100k to go marker, there was a line to take photos.

    Down & Up Trek to Portomarin

    Pretty woodland walk through farms, villages & hamlets. We did get some breaks in the rain, but the rain did prevent me from taking more pics of this beautiful region of Galacia. We are within 100K of our destination. Visited 1 church, talked with the "Big Guy" about bringing some drier weather, so we'll see...As we passed by fields with big green stalks & big leaves I used my PictureThis app & identified these as kale. Saw lots of fields of pumpkins & squashes, cute animals & a cute baby dressed for Halloween.

    All of my weird anxieties came to a head just as we entered Portmarin.
    Between the really steep descent into the town (that killed my knees!) then over a very long, high bridge where I couldn't look down, and immediately up an ancient high set of stairs, where I almost froze in the middle because of my fear of heights, I was very glad today's walk was done! The Camino has definitely taken me out of my comfort zone many times!    En savoir plus

    Heavy rain, a heads-down 18k to Eirexe

    Galacia is officially saturated. Heavy rains started around 8PM last night with only occasional breaks until noon today.

    White Water on the Camino or...

    "A River Runs Through It"....either title would work to describe my day today. Nothing says "fun" more than walking 10 miles in a torrential downpour! Leaving it there... I spent my entire walk today planning my "Apres Camino Spa Day". It kept me sane!

    We are staying in a lovely casa rural. In this village there is just 1 restaurant...nothing else...we just ate a late lunch in it. They close for siesta soon & open again at 8:30 for dinner. There is nothing else here & we're expecting more rain later on!    En savoir plus
