Arrival at Valencia, staying in Torrent

Arrival in Valencia. I will stay with Betty and Erwin, my relatives, in Torrent, a city close to Valencia, connected via metro. Next to my Spanish classes I took, both of them acted as my private conversation teachers, being extremely patient with me and the best hosts you could imagine! Erwin & Betty: GRACIAS!!!

Llegada a València. Me quedaré con Betty y Erwin, mis familiares, en Torrent, una ciudad cercana a Valencia, conectada por metro. ¡Además de mis clases de español que tomé, ambos actuaron como mis profesores de conversación privados, siendo extremadamente pacientes conmigo y los mejores anfitriones que puedas imaginar! Fallas: Exposición del Ninot 2023

Vom 4. Februar bis zum 15. März kann man die Ninot-Kandidaten, die vor dem Feuer gerettet werden sollen, in der Ninot-Ausstellung sehen. Es ist ein Vorgeschmack auf die Fallas, die in den Straßen und auf den Plätzen Valencias aufgestellt werden und vom 16. März bis zu ihrer Verbrennung am Abend des 19. März besucht werden können. Eine Figur der Ninots der Ausstellung wird durch eine Volksabstimmung begnadigt. Im Museo Fallero können die begnadigten Ninots aller Ausgaben der Fallas seit 1934 besichtigt werden.Baca lagi

Several days before the final days of the Fallas (March 15-19) the actual fallas are set up and pieces put together to incredible statues. Streets are decorated and named by the corresponding falla groups. People walk through the town day and night to see those pieces of art growing (in the city of Valencia more of 700, you can’t see them all).

Einige Tage vor dem Finale der Fallas (15. bis 19. März) werden die eigentlichen Fallas-Skulpturen aufgestellt und die Teile zu unglaublichen Statuen zusammengesetzt. Straßen werden von den entsprechenden Falla-Vereinen geschmückt und beleuchtet. Menschen gehen Tag und Nacht durch die Stadt, um diese Kunstwerke wachsen zu sehen (in der Stadt Valencia hibt es mehr als 700 der grossen Fallas, man kann sie eh nicht alle sehen).Baca lagi

By coincidence me and a friend passed by the Plaza de Toros when a corrida was going to start. Spontaneously we decided to have a look. The excitement turned fast into sorrow. A Spanish guy explained the rules and audience’s reactions to us. Although you might understand how this was entertaining in former times, we could just feel sorrow for those bulls who got stressed and punished before they finally died. So it was definitively the first and last bull fight for us.Baca lagi

Das Blumenopfer ist der emotionalste Akt für Falleros und der aufregendste für die Valencianer. Alle Festkomissionen oder Fallas bringen der Virgen de los Desamparados, der Schutzpatronin der Stadt, Blumen dar. Auf der Plaza de la Virgen befindet sich eine riesige Reproduktion der Schutzpatronin, die mit einem bunten Mantel mit den Blumen geschmückt ist, welche die Falleros ihr anbieten. Das Ergebnis ist … einfach dufte!!

Without a doubt, the offering is the most emotional act for falleros and the most exciting for Valencians. All the commissions or fallas make an offering of flowers to the Virgen de los Desamparados, patron saint of the city. In the Plaza de la Virgen there is an immense reproduction of the patron saint, which is adorned with a colourful mantle with the flowers that the falleros offer her. Jeder Verein stellt auch eine Fallera, eine Valencianerin in traditioneller Tracht; unter allen Frauen (Mädchen) wird dann die Fallera Mayor (Fallera Infantil) gewählt, die das Fest dann eine Woche lang offiziell repräsentiert. Die traditionellen Kleider sind extrem aufwändig, teuer und schwer - jedes ein Kunstwerk für sich! Die Herren der Schöpfung sind aber auch nicht unkreativ.

Each Fallas group also provides a fallera, a Valencian woman in traditional costume; the Fallera Mayor (Fallera Infantil) is chosen from among all the women (girls), who then officially represents the falla during the festival. Am letzten Tag werden in festgelegter Reihenfolge erst die Fallas Infantil verbrannt, danach die Fallas. Als letztes wird die grosse Falla am Plaza del Ayuntamiento den Flammen übergeben. Da die Fallas an sich teil schon 25m hoch, erreichen die ersten Flammen gerne mal Hochhaushöhe. Ohne die Bomberos, die hauptberuflichen Feuerwehrleute, geht da nichts.

On the last day, the Fallas Infantil are burned first, followed by the Fallas, in a set order. Finally, the great Falla at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento is burned.
