2026 started off with good friends and good wine; omens to a good year! We first went to Gonzalez, TX to spend time with Mike and Scottie Beth Baker, who are like family to us and we have not seen since our farewell party March 2023. Then on to Fredericksburg where the Crockers, Hansons and Archers meet us for a few days of merriment. We had fun browsing the stores on Main Street, playing Pickleball and had a fabulous lunch at Great Creek Vineyard where somehow Kevin let himself be talked into rejoining the wine club, go figure! (Thank you Nancy for picking up and storing the wine!)
We made friends with our RV neighbors, Paula and Burt. We played Pickleball with them several times and they joined us for drinks one night.
We spent a day with Christian in New Braunfels where we had bbq for lunch, toured T Bar M camp and met several of his colleagues, browsed the shops in Gruene, stopping in historic Gruene Hall for a beer. I’ve been to Gruene several times but this was the first time I went inside the bar and dance hall. For dinner we had pizza at a place in New Braunfels where we watched the NCAA football playoffs. We caught up with old friends of mines, Beth Ann and Scott and it just so happened they were heading back from a trip to Big Bend and staying in the same RV park as us! Unfortunately we only saw them once as the next day we left to head back to Pearland for Kevin’s medical procedure and decided to bring the RV and stay for 6 nights to avoid freezing sleet and concerns of power outages. It did get below freezing in Pearland but overall not too bad.
Before the cold hit I went to the Houston Museum of Fine Arts with Lisa to see the “Louvre Coulture” exhibit that had designer dresses displayed throughout the museum, many pieces having been inspired by specific pieces of art or historical times and cultural places. It was a beautiful exhibit. Once back in Fredericksburg we drove to Horseshoe Bay to visit Nancy and Ricky and stayed a night with them. They have a beautiful home in the Hill Country with lots of deer frequently on their property. We went to Perissos Vineyard and Winery in Burnet for lunch and ate great flatbread pizza along with some wine! For dinner Steph and Dave Metzer joined us and Nancy cooked delicious steaks. We’re looking forward to seeing them next year when we will pick up all the Grape Creek wine that Nancy is retrieving for us! We stopped in Johnson City and Stonewall on the way back to Fredericksburg to tour Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical and State Parks. His boyhood home, one room schoolhouse (attended at age 4), family cemetery, working ranch, VP Air Force plane are all there. The “Texas White House”, his residence during and after his presidency, was closed for renovation and unfortunately we were not able to see that. We celebrated our 30th anniversary at Jack’s Chophouse on Main Street. We ordering tiramisu that was made table side, it was a great experience overall and the best tiramisu we’ve had. Now that we are again wine club members we twice took advantage of the membership by going to Inventions Winery one day and the Grape Creek Wine Room on Main Street another day for our free glasses of wine!Læs mere
