Bordalo Road Trip

September - October 2022

We wanted a wee road trip getaway and there were some more Bordalos that I wanted to see so we planned a route to find 4 more.
This would also be a chance for us to really test the towing capacity of the car as we travelled with our little trailer. Read more

Day 1
Grand Canyon of the East Coast

Setting off from home we worked our way towards Pittsburgh. It was a bit of a long and winding tour via Syracuse and along the finger lakes.
We aimed for Letchworth State Park to check out the canyon and possibly a campsite for the night but no luck. We also stopped to check out some of the canyon falls and watched a hot air balloon struggle to rise.
As we continued on towards Allegheny State Park we experienced the most amazing sunset.Read more

Day 2 - On the way to Pittsburgh

After a bit of a chilly night and a very short stay (late arrival and early start!) we continued south out of the State Park and headed towards Pittsburgh.
As we travelled along we saw signs for Zippo and realized we were passing by the Zippo factory and museum - totally random but having no real plans for this trip we decided to stop.Read more

Day 2
Day 2 - Pittsburgh and Bordalo

After the Zippo museum we continued to make our way to Pittsburgh to find our first North American Bordalo.
Bordalo’s Half Baby Raccoon was created on the side of a commercial building that houses a very busy reduce/reuse centre.
As we left Pittsburgh and worked our way east towards Massachusetts we drove into the remnants of Hurricane Ian. There was just so much rain.
We finally made it to Bald Eagle State Park near State College after the office had closed, parked in one of the sites noted as available and then were up early enough the next day to leave before the office opened - glad to have had one free night of camping when we paid some premium prices later in the trip!Read more

Day 3 - Moose!

We eventually made our way to the next Bordalo on our list.
While Bordalo’s Moose were in the Springfield MA area, the area of Holyoke MA was definitely a lot sketchy!
We did actually do 2 drive-bys of the location and then beat a very hasty retreat. We certainly looked a lot out of place with our little trailer on behind.Read more

Day 3 - Stop at the Falls

After ditching on our free night stay, we worked our way to the second Bordalo stop of the trip.
While most of our trip we travelled along the interstates we did take the occasional “side road”.
In this case we passed along the Delaware Gap and decided to make a stop at Dingmans Falls.
A lovely area with a couple of waterfalls, a great place to get out and stretch our legs.
Just past Dingmans Ferry we slipped in to the very upper corner of New Jersey to grab a geocache and score our NJ caching souvenir!Read more

Day 4 - The final 2

After a lovely evening at Sunsetview Farm and Camping Area we worked our way towards the final 2 pieces of art. We passed through Brimfield MA and will definitely keep that location in mind if we ever want to check out some antiques!
The final Bordalo’s, Half Baby Wolverine and Half White Mouse, were located in Lynn MA on 2 sides of the same building. Again the neighbourhood was a bit run down but much less sketchy than Holyoke!Read more

We were right there so thought we would try and check out Salem MA.
While it would have been fun to check it out better, with the trailer on behind there was just no way to find a place to park. I think Salem would be interesting but maybe not in October!
We did manage to pull over for just a few minutes while I jumped out to grab a geocache so we could get our MA souvenir as well!Read more

So in addition to Bordalo’s and geocaches we wanted to see the ocean so we looked for a campground along the coast. We camped just north of Freeport for a couple nights and of course had to make a stop in Freeport and the famous LL Bean!Read more

Day 6
Day 6 - Climbing Mountains

It was time to start working our way west and toward home.
But first a stop in North Conway NH!
Luckily it wasn’t far from our stay in Sagadahoc Bay ME to North Conway and we arrived in town early enough to find a campground, park the trailer and make it to the base on Mt Washington before they closed the road for the day!
It was quite a harrowing ride both up and down the mountain 😳 but very worth it at the top. While it wasn’t a perfectly clear afternoon I think the cloud cover added to the view. And then we actually drove through some of the low cloud cover on the trip back to the base.Read more

Day 7 - Hanging around North Conway

We decided to spend our final day in and around North Conway.
We did the obligatory outlet shopping, checked out some of the small local shops as well and squeezed in a round of mini putt.
More than 30 years ago my Mom and I took a road trip to the east coast to visit LL Bean and made a stop in North Conway. We stayed at the School House Inn which is still in business today! While the mini putt that Mom and I checked out on our visit was closed, Kev and I did find another and paid homage to that trip way back in the early 90’s.
While the Saco River Camping Area was by far the most expensive place we stayed on our trip it was absolutely the most conveniently located and had every amenity possible including a dog park for Denny to burn off some energy after sitting in the car for days!Read more
