    Deer and Lang Caves

    April 6, 2017 in Malaysia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Went for an afternoon tour to 2 famous caves here. Firstly, we headed for the Lang Cave which is the smallest showcave in Mulu National Park. Though small, it is home to spectacular rock formations both from the ceiling and floor.

Then our tourguide brought us to the Deer Cave, which has the largest cave passage in the world. Home to over 5 million bats, no doubt you will either accidently step on or touch bat poop or rather 'guano'. I hear it is very salty. Yes, people eat it. Anyway, this is a huge cave. 174 metres wide and 122 metres high. The cave path eventually leads to a hole in the roof known as the Garden of Eden where you can see plants thrive.

After cave exploration, we sat outside facing the Deer Cave to watch bats fly out of the cave. This occurs between 5pm to 7pm, where swarms of bats fly out in groups of various intervals. Never knew they were so organized!

Following bat watching, we headed back to our cabins to rest. Another adventure awaits tomorrow.
