      Singapore Day 3

      March 17 ⋅ ⛅ 88 °F

Last half day in Singapore, and Morris stopped for selfies, (LOL). We decided to quickly visit India Street, where vibrant colors could be seen on buildings and in the stalls with fabrics, produce, and flowers.

Went to Merlion Park to see the Lion fountain. The Merlion is the official mascot of Singapore. It is depicted as a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish and it welcomes all visitors to Singapore.

Singapore is 70% Buddhist, 13% Hindu, 10% Muslim, 7% Christain. The main reason Singapore split from Malaysia was because PM Yew (1965-1990) wanted to have a country that allowed all religions, had cultural diversity, and was inclusive to all. Malaysia is predominantly Muslim.

Last stop - getting a Singapore Sling at the rooftop of the Surf Board Sky Park Lavo Bar. What a view!

Job well done PM Yew......what a beautiful country!!!

In the evening we had a wonderful dinner with friends…. Erin, Mui, Younga and David celebrating my birthday with delicious flourless chocolate cake for dessert that was ordered in advance.
Pat, a lovely lady, friend had her birthday on the same day. We had a chance to get together for a short time and exchange best wishes to each other.
After dinner we came to our decorated cabin. Nice touch!

Singapore photos and a few thoughts

      March 30, 2023 ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

I thought I’d add a few photos taken in Singapore including the silver ball photo missed in the original post.

We’re now in Barcelona and I’m thinking about the long day from Singapore to Barcelona, though it won’t be the longest flight in our whole trip, and have made a couple of observations of customer service along the way. I’ve been in that business since starting work 50 whole years ago as a telephone exchange operator aged almost 17, have been in PA/secretarial roles and various training/teaching of adult roles along the way. I think you need to be polite and friendly but not servile and it disturbed me in Singapore to see men and women cleaners and other similar roles almost bowing when they were given a polite thank you.

On the other hand, in a public facing role in airports such as check-in, managing queues, checking boarding passes and passports on boarding, those people need to be on their guard for dodgy people (not us of course) but can still be polite. A sneering nod of the head or flick of the hand when indicating to come forward doesn’t do it for me, nor a snapped answer and virtual push off.

Flight crews so far have varied too. The Qantas crews Auckland/Sydney and Sydney/Singapore were ‘normal’ – efficient but pleasant, friendly, had a few laughs and nothing seemed to be a bother. Emirates on the other hand were there just to pick up their pay; they looked bored, weren’t very visible, barely smiled, didn’t interact with the passengers much at all. A real contrast and Emirates had a good reputation but now the cost cutting shows too with no amenity packs for night flights, no printed menus (first world problem of course), snacks served were ‘interesting’ – a choice of a hot pre-packaged bread roll filled with a cheese or egg mix, plus water and a dryish sweet small cupcake. Meals varied from fairly unappetising to not too bad.

But back to customer service and you definitely do get some gems such as the lovely Filipina lady at the boarding gate in Dubai, short and quite round (like some of us are), ‘Good morning’ greeting with a happy smile, checked the boarding pass and passport and sent us on our way with a ‘have a nice flight’. Great example to others.

      Indonesia: Bintan Island

      August 22, 2023 ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We are leaving Singapore: for 1 day. 🤷🏽‍♀️
Destination is Bintan, an Indonesian island off the coast of Singapore.

Bintan is known for its beautiful beaches, rich historical sites, amazing fauna, as well as abundant Chinese temples and seafood restaurants. Some good places to visit on Bintan Island is Tanjung Pinang, which is the capital city, as well as the surrounding islands.

Ferry duration from Singapore to Bintan Island ranges from 1 hour and 10 minutes to 1 hour and 45 minutes depending on the ferry route operator, and ship. The distance between Singapore to Bintan Island is approximately 42 nautical miles.

      Day 84: Welcome to Singapore

      March 15 ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

Good Morning Singapore! We appreciated being able to sleep in this morning. The Neptune will dock around 12:00 pm and our “Introduction to Singapore” excursion is at 12:45pm. We will be docked for two nights which means we will have time to check out the city without needing to rush back to the ship.

Our biggest sadness is some of our new found friends are leaving the ship and not continuing on towards London. Because of the unrest in the Red Sea the itinerary to go through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean has shifted to go around Africa. The reasons for leaving vary. We will miss you for the rest of our journey. Thank you for touching our lives and making this adventure a bit more special for knowing you.

The photos in this footprint display the activities happening right now aboard the Neptune.

The ship is carefully guided around countless number of ships all waiting to get to the port. It is an ocean side traffic jam which reminds us of the city streets of Vietnam. The skyline is a dynamic cityscape.

In the Wintergarden an Arts and Craft showing is going on. Displays of knitting and craft projects, as well as, the Calligraphy work many of us have been creating this past segment are on view for all to see. Can you find Donna’s and my calligraphy examples?

So, in no particular order please enjoy the photos as we are welcomed into Singapore.
