Tunnel of ice

We came across a small tunnel of ice. There was a deep hole on one side where the water was swirling down into the depths while on the other side the path continued onto the ice back up to the glacier. A few of us jumped into the tunnel and came up the other side. It was a fabulous experience.En savoir plus

Another chasm

The return route was equally spectacular. The were different kinds of chasms and ice formations in this area. We were still in a largely stone free zone.

To the top of a mount

By now, we had grown quite confident in our walk with the cramp ons. We crossed many ridges and cracks to reach a small mount in the glacier. We stopped here for a while and had our snacks and drinls before returning. For the return, we requested our guide to take a different track back.En savoir plus

The heart formation

Deeper onto the glacier, we came across a heart shaped formation in the snow. The ice was very clear and pure here.

The true glacier walk

A bit further in our walk, we could see stones that had sunk into the glacier ice and the fresh clear ice had formed around them to give a very beautiful spectacle. There were deep cracks where water had frozen on the surface into a clear layer and the water below looked deep blue. By now, there were hardly any stones on the glacier and we were walking on pure glacial ice from millions of years ago.En savoir plus

Into the chasm

To the ice chasm

Deep on the glacier, our guide took us towards a chasm in the ice. There was water pouring down and the hole was about 10 mts deep into the ice sheet. He decided that we should go in to experience how it is to have ice all around.En savoir plus

Deeper onto the glacier

We continued our walk over ridges and past cracks in the ice. There were valleys created between the ice sheets. At some places it was very warm from the wind blowing from the forest around.

Walking on the glacier

Slowly as we continued with our walk and started getting used to the cramp ons, our guide took us deeper onto the glacier. The stones started reducing in number and the ice started appearing everywhere. It was an amazing experience. We continued past gullies and over ridges.En savoir plus

When we stopped our guide showed us how to put on the cramp ons. It was 11:30 am so we took the opportunity to have the snacks given to us in the morning. After the food we put on the cramp ons and the gaiters and were ready to walk on ice 😁En savoir plus

Over the stone covered glacier

The path further past the moraines was over ice but the ice was totally covered with stones and organic matter so we continued our walk with the normal shoes for another 15-20 min till we reached a place where the ice started appearing between the stones. Off for the glacier walk

We were up early, loaded our bags in the pickup and checked out. We parked at the pickup point of our glacier walk tour anf moved the bags inside of our vehicle. After that, we were off in the tour van towards the Exploradores glacier. The route was very scenic. We stopped at Cascada La Nutria on the way.
We started the trek around 10 am. The initial path was through thick forest. After trekking for about 20 min, we came to a place where there were a lot of boulders. We had to jump between the boulders to move along. After the boulders, came the moraine of the glacier. There were a series of moraines formed by the retreating glacier. We had to trek up and then down each one of them till we came across a glacial lake. This lake forms the starting point of for the walk on the ice.En savoir plus

On the way back, we stopped at the viewpoint of Lago Negro and the Lago General Carrera. It was even more stunning in the golden glow of the setting sun. We reached back Puerto Rio Tranquilo around 11:30 pm and drove straight to a restaurant for dinner.En savoir plus

Sunset at La Confluencia

The walk to the confluence was a short one of about 500 mts. The views were spectacular. The rio Baker is extremely blue while Nef is muddy brown so one can see the mixing of the waters very clearly at the confluence.En savoir plus

Off to La Confluencia

Back in Rio Tranquilo, we still had about 2.5 hours of sunlight left so we decided to drive South upto La Confluencia to see the confluence of the river Baker and river Nef. The confluence is about 80 kms from Puerto Rio Tranquilo so we knew we would make it before sunset.
The route is quite scenic. We passed the Mirador for the Los Leones vista. Its a beautiful view of the snow covered mountain peaks. After that, we continued on the Carretera Austral till just before Aldana where we turned off the Carretera Austral to the right towards Lago Negro. Here, there is a stunning viewpoint of the Lago Negro and the blue colored Lago General Carrera behind.
We reached the confluence at about 8:30 pm just as the sun was setting.En savoir plus

After cruising along for a while near the marble chapel, we went back to Rio Tranquilo. The ride was one amazing joyride with our boat half the time in the air and half on the water. The water was still choppy and with every wave, we were flung a few meters in the air. We reached back around 6:15 pm.En savoir plus

At one of the places, the marble had varying hies of yellow, white, green and blue, all in streaks along the eroded hill side. It looked stunning in the diffused light of the sun.

Marble Cathedrals

Inside the marble cathedrals, it was quite obvious why they were called so. There were interconnected tunnels and caves all in the shape of a cathedral. There were some interesting stone formations as well.En savoir plus

After a short ride further, we reached the Marble Cathedrals. These are marble cave formations in the shape of cathedrals, nartow at the top and opening up towards the bottom in a curved pyramidal shape. We went inside one of them. It was very beautiful indeed.En savoir plus

The Elephant formation

A bit further on, towards the end of the cove, we saw the elephant formation. The marble pillar extending from the broad top, looked like the trunk of an elephant.

We cruised along the marble hills looking at the caves and formations. The water was much less choppy here and we could easily go in and come out of the narrow caves. The boat captain also pointed out the turtle formation to us.En savoir plus

Amazing colors in the marble

The colors in the marble were amazing. There were green from the algae and different shades of white and grey.
