  • Cultural Madrid

    1 Ekim 2017, Ispanya ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Madrid turned out to be a lot more artistic and fun place than I had expected. A lot of cultural shows and street dancing. Some very cool graffiti.. Its a happening place with a lot of pubs and bars with a pulsating night life. And its hot here.. Believe me after the 12C in Stockholm, the 25C feels like an ovenOkumaya devam et

  • Cuenca, Spain

    1 Ekim 2017, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Just about a 100 kms from Madrid is the lovely medieval town of Cuenca. Beautiful location perched high up on the stone cliffs with some beautiful old hanging houses and churches and stone architecture buildings with terracotta tiled red roof houses, make it an ideallic location for a day outing.Okumaya devam et

  • The eyes of truth and Devil's Window

    1 Ekim 2017, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Some amazing fall colors in this region make for a very stunning drive. The eyes in the hill near Cuenca is a unique natural erosion converted to a piece of art. On the way to Albarracín we stopped at the Devil's window. Also saw some very stunning villages on the way.Okumaya devam et

  • Albarracín, a stunning city in the hills

    1 Ekim 2017, Ispanya ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

If there is one stunning town with a lovely medieval feel that I would have to choose, I would choose Albarracín. It a set in a dramatic narrow valley between two hills. Its a feast to the eyes with orange peach color stone buildings with classic period architecture. It gets even more dramatic as the sun sets and the illumination lights turn on. Its a jewel to be touched and felt with your own eyes and senses. No pictures can do enough justice to the beauty of the place. Have a look and decide yourself...Okumaya devam et

  • Albarracín a hidden jem

    2 Ekim 2017, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Albarracín was stunning in the night but turned out to be even better in the daylight. Beautiful classic stone buildings in a hill station location... there won't be many other combinations that could beat it.Okumaya devam et

  • Horizontally across Spain.. almost :)

    2 Ekim 2017, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

The morning was nice and sunny while we walked around the town but within a few hours the clouds had rolled in and we could feel the condensed droplets on the face. It was a beautiful experience after a long time. We drove from Albarracín to Salamanca a distance of about 500 kms in about 6 hours. The 1st 300 kms was a very scenic ride with a lovely rolling hills and sunflower plantations on both the sides. Interestingly, most of the sunflowers were dryed up and almost brown. Once we touched the highway near Madrid, the road became very dreary and totally devoid of anything interesting. We reached Salamanca by 6 pm.Okumaya devam et

  • Salamanca, an architecturally rich town

    2 Ekim 2017, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Salamanca turned out to be a yet another fabulous town. Almost every other building near the Plaza Mayor was a piece of unique architecture. The town is much bigger than any other places we had visited till now. Finding the parking was a huge task, eventually we found a place near the edge of the town and walked to the Plaza Mayor. The main square was a place where the locals and the tourists all converge and enjoy the evening. Everywhere around the square, there are places to sit and eat outside. A very festive atmosphere prevails in the fantastic town. After a hearty meal of paella we set about discovering the town in the late evening.Okumaya devam et

  • Graffiti in Salamanca

    3 Ekim 2017, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

In the light of the day, Salamanca showed a totally different face in the variety of graffiti one could see there. Interestingly, the graffiti was not one of those illegal ones, but, quite nicely done on the garage doors of the residential buildings. We had managed to get a free parking right infront of the hostel at night but the charges started at 9am so I went and bought a ticket till 12 pm and left the car there as we headed to the Plaza Mayor to see the sights in the light of the day that we had already seen at night.Okumaya devam et

  • Effects of the Catalunya referandum

    3 Ekim 2017, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

So, just yesterday had been the day when Catalunya had its referandum. The effects could be seen everywhere we went. The patriotic feelings had been stroked everywhere. In the areas we had been traveling, most people were seen supporting a united Spain. There were Spanish flags flying from the balconies of the apartments. There were stickers stating Catalunya is part of Spain, stuck everywhere. Then there was this building with the Spanish flags flying... but one enterprising Finn didn't give a damn about Spain or Catalunya, he had his own Finnish flag flying from his balcony 😁😁
    There's patriotism for you...

  • Astronaut in the Cathedral

    3 Ekim 2017, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Back at the city center, we saw the places we had seen the previous night. The Casa Concha (House of Sea Shells) with the sea shells spread out on the outer wall, the exotic Salamanca Cathedral with its ornate gothic architecture. In the light of day, we observed an interesting piece of carving on the cathedral wall.. an astronaut, fully decked in the sapce suit and shoes. Check it if you don't believe it. We overheard an English guide explain that this was added in place of a fallen statue. The renovations were done during the 1960s when the 1st manned mission had reached moon and to depict the hand of God in the success of the mission, this seemed to be an appropriate place and subject for the cathedral wall. 😈
Another interesting carving was of a monkey eating a softy ice cream. This too was added during the renovation. The reason as explained by the guide being that the peak of pleasure that one may have when eating an ice cream can easily be achieved in the Cathedral.
A very innovative sales pitch I must say 🤣🤣

  • Back in Madrid

    3 Ekim 2017, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We headed back to Madrid at around 12 pm. By 3pm, we were already in the city. Took the time to see the sights in Madrid, have lunch, take a quick shower and head to the airport for the night flight to Santa Cruz, Bolivia.Okumaya devam et

  • Bolivia, 1st impressions

    4 Ekim 2017, Bolivya ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Took off from Madrid at 12 am and after a restless 11 hour flight landed at 5:30 am at Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia. After passing through the customs and migration, I was out by 6:15 am. The pickup van was a bit late but we managed to find each other by 6:40 and we were off to the city.
Driving from the airport to the city, it felt like a drive on the Electronic City Road in Bangalore. Except that the boards were in Spanish, it looked like any Indian town. Once in the old town, there were quite some differences. The roads are much narrower, the buildings generally one or two stories only and all had terracotta roofs.
We reached the hostel by about 7:15 am. Since my room was still not available, I had to sit and wait in the hostel dining area. The expected availability time was 11 am, so I decided to finish the checkin, eat some breakfast and go for a city walk before I got the room.
The city center is just 5 blocks from the hostel so I left my bigger bag at the hostel and walked there. It was already 8:30 am and the sun had started to beat down on the town. It was around 20C but the slight breeze was very pleasant.
Most of the transportation seems to via mini buses called Micros. There were quite many banks in this area. Most of the banks had queues of people outside waiting to go in. It seemed most of them were very small inside or there were too many people all at the same time deciding to go to the bank. Here too, there was very beautiful graffiti on the walls.

  • Plaza Principal 24 De Septiembre

    4 Ekim 2017, Bolivya ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

The main square is called the 24th September Square in honor of the anniversary of the uprising that brought Santa Cruz to independence. Today this is one of the most important places for social and casual meetings between young and old from all walks of life and nationalities. The walls around the plaza have some very beautiful graffiti.
Another interesting thing is that one rarely sees a Bolivian flag here. The predominant flags are the green, white and green flags of the Santa Cruz province.

  • Interesting stuff at 24 September Plaza

    4 Ekim 2017, Bolivya ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Besides people sitting and relaxing and people watching, there were quite many shoe shine vendors, there were also many hand carts with food items. Many people were selling fresh orange juice and some fruit dipped in some syrup. I've not figured these out yet but plan to do before the end of the day 😉Okumaya devam et

  • The reunion in Bolivia

    4 Ekim 2017, Bolivya ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

I spent the morning after checking in to do all the pictures backup and some washing. The missed sleep from the previous night finally caught up at around 2pm, so I decided to have an hours snooze. The plan being to wake up by 3:30 and then have some lunch and be back by 4:30 when Hristo was expected to arrive.
He landed early and passed through the security quite quickly as well so he was waiting when I arrived back. It was awesome to catch up with each other after a long time. Lots of stories from his African adventure. Time just flew by while we sat and chatted about the experiences from Africa and the plan for the Bolivia trip. Around 6:30 we finally left to find food and also find out about the different ways to reach Sucre.
Met the manager of the hostel and he recommended taking the flight instead of the bus since the roads were in pretty bad condition and the journey was of 14 hrs. The flight turned out to be just 100 b$ more and would take 45 min, so we changed the plan and decided to fly early at 9:20 next morning.
Having done that we went out to look for food and try and find a cheaper way to get to the airport. The hostel was charging 80 b$, we asked a taxi guy and he quoted 70 b$. The guy was honest enough to tell that we could just walk 500 mts to the place from where we could get the regular bus to the airport and it would be 3b$. We managed to find it and it turned out to be 6 b$ but still, way cheaper than all the other options and it was starting at 5 am and every 20 min.
So having checked that part, we decided to eat.

  • Fooooooddd

    4 Ekim 2017, Bolivya ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

First up, we drank chicha from a hand cart seller just outside the bus stop. Then it was the groundnut and jaggery mix that we call moofli gachack in India. Then had a good dinner at a local restaurant where they whipped up a lovely vegetarian meal for me. After sitting and chatting there for almost 3 hours we walked to the main plaza and then back to the hostel. Have to wake up early to reach the airport in time. Planning to catch the 7 am bus to the airport.Okumaya devam et

  • Off to Sucre

    5 Ekim 2017, Bolivya ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

As planned, we were up early by 6 and ready to go to the local bus stop by 7 am. We walked the 500 mts to the bus station in 15 min. Around the bus station, there were local ladies selling soups, bread dishes and chicha made from quinoa. We want to have the food there but the micro was leaving in 5 min so decided to have the food at the airport.Okumaya devam et

  • This is how we book the rooms

    5 Ekim 2017, Bolivya ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

So, just when we were about to leave for the airport, we figured that in the excitement of meeting each other and exchanging stories, we had totally forgotten to book the room in Surce. Since we were getting late, we didn't have the option to connect online to do the booking. We reached the airport at 8:15 am and had dropped off the bags by 8:20. We tried using the free wifi at the airport but it didn't work so we decided we'll figure out something when we land. We had our breakfast before the security check and then when we about to board the plane Hristo's phone got connected to the wifi. We dropped out of the line and did a quick booking in less than 2 min 😁
Lets see how it goes now...
    Its a 30 min flight.

  • Sucre

    5 Ekim 2017, Bolivya ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Reached Sucre at 10 am. The town is 2800 mts high up in the Andes but the airport is higher at about 3100 mts. At the airport, we bought a SIM card so we could call the hostel since the booking mentioned a free airport shuttle. Called the hostel and were informed that the free shuttle was only from Jun-Aug. Asked a taxi guy and he quoted 50b$. We then asked at the SIM shop. The guy was very helpful and told that the bus was 8 b$. We decided to take that option.Okumaya devam et

  • Sucre, reaching the hostel

    5 Ekim 2017, Bolivya ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

The micro dropped us off about 800 mts from the hostel. 800 mts in itself is not far but when you have to climb vertically with a 15 kg backpack at 3000 mts, it was a pleasant exercise in preparation of the coming high altitude days. The hostel was really worth all the effort. Very nice lawns, building and the grill sitout.Okumaya devam et
