    After centuries of Spanish rule, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States in 1898 and has been largely self-governing since the mid-20th century. It has a population of over 3 million people and a vibrant culture shaped by a mix of Spanish, United States and Afro-Caribbean influences. The streets are filled with color and activity, the skyline is filled with kites, and the coast line is as diverse as the two oceans surrounding the archipelago of Puerto Rico. It was a true joy to visit my “Lone Star College” friend-Ita Jervis’s city.Read more
