Tramping tales Part 1
Jun 3–11, 2025 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C
I have my best ideas when tramping!! Today's idea (11th June) was to create little vignettes of every hike (tramp), a little overview of each walk and 4 pictures.
Definition of tramping - is really an overnight trek but it didn't fit with my title so my dear NZ friends have said it's okay to use it in this instance.
My hikes are generally day hikes as I'm on my own and they are normally there and back the same way which I'm not a fan of but it's the only way I can do them! Unless it is a circuit track.
As this is the first tramping post of many, I want to reassure all my family and friends that I'm not danger hungry, I would never put myself in any danger and if I felt vulnerable I would turn back.
So, with that little caveat, shall we begin the tramping tales.
Cape Reinga - a short incredibly windy and rainy hike. On the edge of the cliff and at the very north of the North Island, the weather was unbelievable and a bit scary! The views were worth the blustery atmosphere and I was rewarded by a rainbow!
Lake Taharoa Circuit (Kai Iwi lakes) - Beautiful 8km circuit round the lake, stayed in the camp site by the lake so the next morning I did the High track to Lake Waikere - about 12 km and really lovely, few nice hills and another lake then finished off on the Lake Taharoa circuit again. Fabulous way to start the day before driving to Piha.
Mercer loop at Piha - a very short circuit but stunning views, just the right amount of windy and some nice slopes to get these legs working!
Kiapawa Trig - Coromandel - this was a proper hike! Up hill to a lovely view point, I don't think I reached the top, I didn't feel safe on the track at one point so came back down but I did walk about 6km in total. The trek was slippery, fun and there were many obstacles in my way! I was treated to a little land slide where the path was almost non existent but I made it! As I say, never would put myself in danger. I smiled the whole walk.
In between I've done some beach walks and I certainly tramped but they don't fit the bill!
