  • Beaches and Sunset

    28 giugno 2023, Trinidad e Tobago ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

As soon as we dropped our bags in our room we headed down to the amazing beach next to the hotel. The water was crystal clear and about 29 degrees, I could see schools of small bait fish swimming around my legs, and the sand was super soft. After a couple of hours in the sea we swapped the sea for the pool where we relaxed the afternoon away.
At the end of the day we were treated to a beautiful sunset - best one of the holiday:

  • Tobago to 🇹🇹 Trinidad

    29 giugno 2023, Trinidad e Tobago ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

After a breakfast at the hotel we enjoyed the beautiful weather and headed back to the beach for a swim.
After two hours we headed back to the hotel, checked out and then checked in for our flight back to Trinidad.
Schedule didn’t matter as we were all on board early and left 25 minutes early - landing before we were due to leave!
Gladys headed out for Paige’s graduation and we got take away Pizza and did some Dens work.

  • Bel Air La Romain - home

    30 giugno 2023, Trinidad e Tobago ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Today we took an hour’s drive South of San Fernando to where I grew up from birth to 5 years old. It took us a while to find the house as it had been knocked down and a new one had been built- Gladys rang our old neighbour Jean Stampfli for directions! His old house up the hill had been knocked down. But we found my old place ❤️😊Leggi altro

  • And then there were doubles

    30 giugno 2023, Trinidad e Tobago ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

We couldn’t come to TT and not have Doubles.
    These cost about $1.50AUD
The outside wrap is made from chick peas and water.
Then the inside is curried chickpeas and split peas.
You can choose between no pepper, little pepper or big pepper- Ernest and I went for little pepper, Jasin and Gladys had no pepper.
BUT I think the chef got distracted and mine and Ernest’s was super hot!!!
They cook it fresh in the early hours and sell it on the side of the road.

  • Lunch & Dad & Gran Barbara

    30 giugno 2023, Trinidad e Tobago ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

After visiting where I grew up we headed back to POS and had an amazing large lunch at Trotters! But not before I had a double expresso. I’m in a food coma now.
Then we headed to see where Dad’s small ashes had been buried with his mother and her parents. It was sad to see all the surrounding graves severely overgrown - and a few homeless people begging in there.Leggi altro

  • Maracus Beach - Shark & Bake

    30 giugno 2023, Trinidad e Tobago ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

After a quiet start we packed up the car and headed off to Chateau Pinard - via Maracus Beach to buy some Shark and Bake. The bake is a kind of bread they hand make then fill it with Shark 🦈 which Jasin had, I had cheese. Then you add your salad and dressings! Skipper aka Skippy the Moodle / Maltipoo came along for the ride too.
The beach was how I remembered it as a child with the coconut trees.

  • Chateau Pinard Blanchisseuse

    1 luglio 2023, Trinidad e Tobago ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

After a windy hours drive we arrived at Chateau Pinard - which is owned by Ernest’s Nephew. Almost the whole Pinard family were there. Paul and Giselle, and two of their girls, Frank and Kerry and three girls, Jacinta and Mike, plus Emma who turned 8 and Mia. The only couple missing was Christie and Christian.
Paul cooked some amazing BBQ burgers and Mahi Mahi, and we swam in the sea down 50 steps and then lazed in the pool chatting to the girls - such a lovely family. They really made me feel welcome.

  • From Trinidad to New York

    2 luglio 2023, Trinidad e Tobago ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Our last day in Trinidad was spent packing and resting. We went to Bruce’s place and had a lovely Chinese takeaway with his daughter Aileen and her girls.
Then at 8:30pm we said a sad farewell to Gladys and Ernest and headed to the Caribbean Airways lounge to wait for our 12:10am flight to JFK NYC. We finally got to hear a lone steel band playing which was amazing.
The lunge was very modern - but not many food options. However we were able to get work done before boarding the flight at 11:30. Jasin had an X on his boarding pass so he got stopped on every security check - including as he boarded the plane.
What was great was the we got upgraded to business which I bid for - and were in row 4.
The flight was comfy but bumpy and it was hard to sleep - but we made it - arriving at 5am.

  • Trains & Time Square

    3 luglio 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We dropped our bags at the hotel at 8:30am and headed straight out back on the train to NYC. The whole subway / Train system is so confusing - we bought an expensive ticket that turned out to be for the subway only - so we had to buy a $5,25 ticket to the city (again)
We were hanging out for a diner breakfast like at Sanfran. We found one and went straight in. I had waffles and eggs and bacon plus a coffee, Jasin had a salmon bagel - and the whole bill came to well over $100 AUD wow crazy expensive.
Times Square was my favourite- hectic but I loved the vibe and all the huge screens everywhere.
Next stop was the Empire State Building - we headed up to the 86th floor and the views were amazing. Once again you had to battle your way through the crowds.
Our final stop was the Chelsea Markets which were interesting. Again packed!!
We then jumped on the subway to Penn Station on 33rd and bought tickets for the train.
After waiting 30 minutes we were advised of a signal failure and no trains were going anywhere. Exhausted we ended up taking a taxi back to the hotel which cost us $200AUD - needless to say this was a very expensive day!

  • Subway and Central Park

    5 luglio 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

After a less than average breakfast with a waiter who couldn’t give a damn - we booked our last accommodation in Asia and some flights then headed out to take the Path subway. We made it all the way to 33rd street then jumped on the wrong train heading south instead of North to Central Park - but we made it! And damn it was hit. 32 degrees with a real feel for 40 🥵- so after 30 minutes we headed back to the air conditioned train! So many strange people here in NY!Leggi altro

  • United Airways to UK

    5 luglio 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

United premier was interesting. We got our own checking and security- but so did everyone else and there were lots of people flying premier!
The plane was late in and so late leaving because of cleaning and catering. We had a drunk noisy American standing behind us in the queue so struggled to hear the announcements - luckily he was up the back so we didn’t hear him once we were on the plane.
Jasin got a great seat next to a window with a view - I was in the middle - no window view anywhere but the pod was great and the screen was huge. The service by cabin crew was great too. I slept for about 3 hours and woke just in time for a quick breakfast and landing!

  • Simonds Yat Walk

    8 luglio 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

This morning we managed to skip the rain and walked around 8kms in some beautiful countryside. Maria made sandwiches and we stopped just before the rain started.
In the evening we went out for dinner at the local recommended pub. The staff were having a bad day and we were served by a very grumpy lady. Then it took 30
Minutes for the bill to come - but we were happy chatting 😊

  • Memories- Pilton

    13 luglio 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Today we took Yvonne’s beast and drove to Somerset. First stop was 6 Orchard Lane, which was very overgrown out the front. Then we headed to Pilton. Straight to Totterdown Farm - It was hard to see so many weeds and so overgrown- but I guess it’s a working farm now, and the garden wasn’t a priority.
We then took our life in our hands and took the back roads to Wells. We went straight to Costa coffee ☕️ and I had my expresso and Bakewell tart! Then we headed to Cheryl’s Shop and I surprised her with a visit ❤️.
She shut up shop and we went for another coffee.
We talked about Andy and his death, and about her lovely partner Colin.

  • Wells Cathedral

    13 luglio 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Next stop in an attempt to dodge the drizzle was Wells Cathedral.
Jasin was blown away about how old it was. When we arrive we saw a paid of swans and their 5 signets. They were born in April.
We spent around an hour in there and at the end saw an artist putting together an unusual black ropey sculpture. She told Jasin that it had taken her 2 days to build.Leggi altro

  • Glastonbury Tor

    13 luglio 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

After visiting a rainy Wells we drove across to Glastonbury. We found a pub for lunch which was cheap but very average!! Frozen fish for Jasin and Homebrand lasagne for me!
We then headed to the Tor. It took us ages to find the parking, and ended up in a residential area.
We parked well away from the path up the Tor and so we ended up going through 1000s of stinging nettles and thistles and almost vertical in places… I pushed through and we made it! And it was definitely worth it, the view was amazing!

  • Friends and Food

    18 luglio 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

This week has been all about catching up with old friends, visiting familiar places, eating Fish & Chips, Curry and English Chocolate 😊 and trying to keep warm - welcome to the British summer!
We had a blast catching up with Diane (aka Nannie), Fiona & Guy, Matt & Nina and Clare & Mark. Everyone had wonderful stories to share of lives lived and future plans.
I showed Jasin Royal Wootton Basset, where I used to live. We saw Zoe’s infant school, and many old cafes and shops which were almost the same as when I left for Aus 18 years ago.

  • Avebury

    18 luglio 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

    Day trip to Avebury -
Back to the stones just 15 minutes from old home. But it’s strange I don’t think I ever bought the girls here. We had a meal at the extremely busy Red Lion pub - lucky we ordered when we did because once we had our meals the line was out the door. Jasin loves seeing the stones and enjoyed a DIY fresh milk in a glass bottle that he poured himself!Leggi altro

  • Avebury

    18 luglio 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

This afternoon we went for lunch at the Lion Pub in Avebury, so we could get free parking. It took a long time for food to come out and mine was cold, but Jasin liked his scampi. We then visited the stones, and Jasin got to drink some fresh milk from the dairy!Leggi altro

  • Oxford with Yvonne and Gary

    19 luglio 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Day trip to Oxford - Yvonne and Gary had the day off today and after we visited a metal fabrication for Gary’s steps we drove to the park and ride on the outskirts of Oxford.
We took the double decker bus - much to Jasin’s huge enjoyment to the city centre.
We walked round the university buildings which was fantastic and found Dads Brasenose College.
After a trip to the post office to post some chocolate to my girls we went to Westfield Shopping Centre for some retail therapy and a delicious Vietnamese Lunch. One dress and one top later we headed back to the car for round two of shopping at Bicester Outlet. Yvonne got some shoes, but the rest of the shops were far too posh for us. I felt like we were the only Europeans there!
