• Georgetown to Ipoh

Today we took the train from Georgetown to Ipoh.

We started our day with breakfast at our hotel again, and then headed to the train station in Butterworth via grab to catch our train to Ipoh. It was striking how industrial Butterworth was, and the train station itself was pretty bare bones. That said, once our train arrived we saw it was very similar to an Amtrak train.

Our train ride was uneventful, and when we arrived in Ipoh we took a Grab to our Airbnb. We were very pleased to find that our Airbnb had an accessible rooftop with absolutely epic views of the limestone mountains throughout Ipoh. We unpacked and headed to dinner, and were treated to some Malaysian staples like Laksa, and Nasi Goreng(the Malaysian version is much spicer than the Dutch version we are used to). We went a bit outside of the main tourist area for this meal, and the entire wait staff was shocked to see us- we had a ton of challenges ordering as they didn’t speak English, and even though we pointed at stuff on the menu we ended up with a few wrong items 😂

After dinner we headed to old town Ipoh to check out concubine lane, which used to be the city’s prostitution area, that is now converted into coffee shops, bars, and restaurants. This area was unique, and we enjoyed the street art! Following this part of town, we walked around and explored a bit more. Ipoh overall was a bit rough around the edges- apparently it was originally wealthy due to tin mining, but once that dried up, so did the wealth. The buildings were fairly run down, and there was a lot of trash and feral cats/dogs in the streets.

We walked back to our Airbnb, enjoying my the sunset, and called it a night. Tomorrow we head into the mountains to see Cameron Highlands!
