• Exploring Georgetown

    8 april, Maleisië ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

Today we explored the sights of Georgetown and the surrounding area.

We started our day with breakfast at the hotel, and then made our way to Fort Cornwallis, which was an old English fort from when the area was first colonized. The fort was small, so we spent a brief time there before walking through town to the blue mansion.

On our walk we passed an interesting Mosque(see pictures) and got very hot. So we were relieved that the Blue Mansion was well ventilated and quite cool! The Blue Mansion is a restored mansion that was originally built and owned by a Chinese tycoon. It was filled with rich history and information on its early days and restoration.

Following the Blue Mansion, we took a Grab(Asian version of Uber) to the base of Penang Hill. Here we took the only cable car funicular in Malaysia to the top of the mountain for some EPIC views. This funicular was built by the British 100 years ago, and the top of the mountain was used for military visibility and recreation/vacationing for European wealthy. We saw monkeys in the trees up here which was a neat experience, and the whole area is blanketed in rainforest.

Following Penang Hill, we grabbed another Grab to a huge temple complex called Kek Lok Si. This temple was multi-terraced and built up a mountainside, and was incredible to see and explore! We hiked up a number of stairs to reach the top, and hiked back down when we were done.

To end the night we took a Grab to a Laksa restaurant called Laksalicious, which was incredibly bland and disappointing unfortunately. We decided we couldn’t end the night on that note, and tried homemade ice cream by our hotel to end the night, which was a high point of the evening!
