• Further exploring Santorini

    5月31日, ギリシャ ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Today we further explored Santorini, hiking south to Fira from our hotel in Imerovigli.

We started our day with another breakfast on our balcony, and this view while eating will never get old! Following breakfast we immediately hiked to Fira to beat the heat. This hike was much easier than yesterdays, as the entire path was through residential areas so we had some shade, and everything was paved.

Thira was a zoo with tourists, but we enjoyed the people watching, and seeing a new side of Santorini. Cruise ships access this town via a cable car, and so there were a TON of folks meandering down the streets. We stopped for Baklava at a local bakery; the presentation was fantastic, but the taste wasn’t quite as good as the Baklava we’d had previously in Meteora(it seemed they used sugar vs honey).

After enjoying the baklava, we explored an art gallery with very cool glass fish, and then headed back towards our hotel. On the way back we hiked out to Skaros Rock, which is a promontory that used to house a castle and city over the volcanic crater. Apparently the castle was first founded in 300BC, but a series of volcanic eruptions caused it to be abandoned during the medieval ages. Now there are some very cool ruins you can explore, and a church that has been built onto a cliff face at the very bottom.

Following Skoros Rock, we grabbed gelato in town; we tried their baklava flavor, but it just wasn’t as good as the real thing! After this, we relaxed until dinner time. For dinner we headed into town for a final authentic Greek meal, and then we called it an early night with a flight to Rome tomorrow!
