• Santorini to Rome

    June 1 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Today we made the journey from Santorini to Rome.

We started our day with an early shuttle to the airport, where we hung out for a bit in the boarding area as this airport didn’t have a lounge.

After an uneventful flight, we landed in Rome, and took an hour cab to our Airbnb. There was a professional bike race in Rome today, so we had to be dropped decently far away and go on foot, as many major roads were shut down for the race.

After settling our bags, we walked across a nearby river to the Trestavere neighborhood of Rome. This was a beautiful part of town, and was HEAVILY touristed. We learned that we are visiting Rome during a 3 day holiday, so apparently many Italians are vacationing here in addition to the normal tourist flow.

We found a local spot to eat, and they had a wait line and a ton of google reviews, so we figured it would be fantastic! Unfortunately it was a tourist trap(mediocre food, packed inside, limited service)- so next time we are going to try and find a hole in the wall spot.

After our meal we grabbed some gelato, then headed up to our room to relax and do some planning as both of us caught a cold in Santorini and were feeling tired.

After resting a bit we headed back out to explore the Trestavere neighborhood some more. It was still very busy, but with the sun set the crowds didn’t push quite as tightly. We explored the neighborhood much more deeply, and saw a number of really unique squares and churches. We also found a really cool outdoor cinema gathering.

We opted to grab Roman street food for dinner in a really cute square. They were super busy so unfortunately our takeout order was a bit bungled and we ended up with pulled pork sandwiches(how American 😂) we didn’t notice til we got home and it was late, so Chels was a trooper and ate it despite being vegetarian. After this we called it a night, as tomorrow we have a huge exploration day!
