Glencoe Valley

Today we traveled through Glencoe Valley, and ended the day in Fort Williams.

We started our day with breakfast at our hotel, and then grabbed coffee from a local cafe. Afterwards we drove highway A82 through Glencoe Valley, which afforded us beautiful views of the valley and the surrounding mountains.

It was raining off and on throughout our drive, so small waterfalls were cascading down the sides of the mountains lining the valley. Two highlights of the drive were the three sisters, which are an iconic range of three mountains, and the Glencoe Waterfall which is a point where three waterfalls meet and fall together.

The entire area was very green and verdant, and we were impressed by how lush everything was. We got out of the car a number of times for pictures, but opted not to do any hikes due to the off and on rain and the very cold wind. At the end of the valley we visited the Glencoe visitor center where we learned about how the old original homes in the area were made(with thatched roofs and dirt walls) and saw a recreation. Another thing we learned about was the Glencoe massacre, which was a bloody event where soldiers being hosted by the clan MacDonald family butchered the family in the middle of the night all across the valley. This event was the genesis for “The Red Wedding” in the Game of Thrones series.

Following our exploration of Glencoe we headed to Fort William where we walked the town and grabbed Scottish food at a local pub(we tried haggis and neeps, or turnips). After dinner we relaxed at the hotel, and tomorrow we hike the tallest mountain in the UK.Läs mer
