Skaftafellsjokull & Mulagljufur Canyon

Today we hiked the area around the Skaftafellsjokull glacier tongue, hiked the Mulagljufur Canyon, explored the Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon, and visited Diamond Beach.

We started our day with breakfast at our hotel(Chels whipped us up some oatmeal), and then drove straight to the Skaftafellsjokull glacier tongue. First we checked out the visitor center, and then we hiked to the base of the glacier tongue. This tongue is stemming from Iceland’s largest glacier Vatnajökull, and was pretty darn impressive to see! After enjoying the glacier tongue from below, we hiked up above it for panoramic views. On the hike down we got to see a number of cool waterfalls, with the highlight being a waterfall set between basalt columns.

Our next stop was Mulagljufur Canyon, and this was one of our favorite stops in Iceland yet. This hike took us along a canyon that was completely green with moss growing over the rock, with multiple waterfalls cascading down the walls. Words don’t do it justice, but we’ve included a video!

After the canyon we drove to Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon, where we were able to watch massive pieces break off of an iceberg and float in the water in front of us. This was pretty neat to see in person, and really helped give a sense of the scale of the ice mass in front of us.

Next we headed to diamond beach, which is a beach covered in shards of ice that are so clear they look like diamonds. We didn’t spend much time here as the weather really started to turn(lots of rain and fog). We headed to the town we stayed in, Hofn, and got some delicious pizza to end the night.Read more
