Exploring Paphos and Limassol

Today we explored the cities of Paphos and Limassol, as well as a number of architectural sites.

We started our day with breakfast at our Airbnb, and then grabbed coffee on the road on our way to Paphos. Once we arrived, our first stop was the Paphos Castle which was originally a Byzantine fort. We checked out the outside, then went on the roof for views of the harbor.

After exploring the castle we drove to the nearby Tomb of the Kings, which was a burial ground used since Roman times with intricate tombs carved into the rock. This was super cool to explore, and really gave a sense for how the Romans and Greeks approached the afterlife and their dead.

We drove next to Aphrodite’s Rock, which legends say is the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite. It was an awesome rock to check out, and looked amazing set against the blue of the ocean. That being said, it was tiny compared to Morro Rock!

Our next stop was the Kourion archaeological park, which housed a number of ancient mosaics, a Roman agora, and an old amphitheater that has since been renovated. We really enjoyed checking these out, and seeing the ruins that were lived in thousands of years ago in some cases.

To end the day we headed to Limassol, where we grabbed dinner in the old town, and then walked around the castle and down the marina. The marina was jam packed with fancy yachts, and seemed like quite the place to dock!Read more
