For the start of our road trip around Kyushu, we headed towards Kita-Kyushu where our first stop was: Hiraodai, one of Japan's largest karst plateaus. On our way to the parking lot, we passed through the Miharashidai which was the best and most scenic spot to view the valley so we had a morning walk back there to catch the views. The rolling hills reminded us of a scene from Howl's Moving Castle, except they had all these rocks protruding from the ground this time around.

Our next stop was Kokura Castle. It wasn't as grand as Aizu-Wakamatsu's Castle over at Fukushima but it was still beautiful nevertheless. We walked around the castle grounds and to the shrine behind it. Despite the holidays, it was surprisingly devoid of people. Satisfied with what we got, we continued on towards Yamaguchi.
