South Vietnam by motorbike

I've been dreaming about something like this for a long time, but having a family doesn't make it easy to actually be able to do it. The summer of 2018 finally gave me the opportunity. Les mer

  • A packed first day

    10. august 2018, Vietnam ⋅ 28 °C

My first full day in Vietnam, and also my last as a pedestrian, was packed like this vendor's bicycle. I walked around the central area of Saigon and visited some of the important sites: Opera House, City Hall (People's Committee), City Museum, Independence Palace and the very impressive - if not shocking - War Remnants Museum. And even though I had walked all day, I still found the energy to enjoy some of the night life.Les mer

  • First day on the motorbike

    11. august 2018, Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 26 °C

The adventure has started: I rented the motorbike without problems and set out on my first long-distance ride in the afternoon. After my first 3 hours of driving in Vietnam, I must say that the chaos of the traffic is manageable. It's all more... organic. And everybody drives a lot slower. What did bother me, though, was the torrential rain. On my journey I got completely wet (and dried off again in the air and wind) at least 3 times.... 😂 But I managed to arrive in Vũng Tàu just fine (~100 km).Les mer

  • La Gi - Coco Beachcamp

    12. august 2018, Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

In most places I couldn't stay two nights in a row if I wanted to keep my schedule, so I continued to La Gi (~95 km) in the afternoon. Not really satisfied with hotel prices, I settled for an unusual type of accommodation: a tent! It was pre-erected, complete with electric installation (!) - including a fan - and part of a real nice, hippie-looking beach camp.Les mer

  • Nha Trang

    13. august 2018, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

It was supposed to be a famous beach town. What I found was a tourist trap, full of newly constructed hotels and resorts as well as a lot of ongoing construction. The town centre consists of travel agents, bars, clubs, souvenir shops and money changers, all trying to get your attention. And what was weirdest: second language on signs and menus here wasn't English!Les mer

  • Driving to Quy Nhon

    14. august 2018, Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

The trip took me from Nha Trang to Quy Nhon today (~210km). It was very windy and not easy to drive. But there were spectacular views along the coast again. Something new also happened: my first flat tyre... I was lucky to be charged only about half of the regular price (20.000 VND = EUR 0.75) by a very friendly mechanic.
Qui Nhon is a rather unremarkable town with a slight communist flair as well as some ancient Cham temples.

  • Hội An - lovely mix of styles

    16. august 2018, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

During the day, Hội An revealed its full charm. It's an interesting mix of Chinese, French and Vietnamese architecture with some Japanese influences. It's beautifully located on the banks of the river Thu Bồn and the old town is best explored on foot. The local landmark, the old Japanese Bridge with a roof, is on the 20,000 Đồng bill.Les mer

  • Chance encounter in the old town

    16. august 2018, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

For a while now I had been toying around with the idea of a few basic language lessons, and when walking around the old town of Hội An, looking for a language class, I was pulled in an education centre by a group of Japanese exchange students who "sold" me a fruit tasting lesson as their internship project for their business studies course. It was so much fun! A local coordinator even taught me some basic words in Vietnamese (don't ask me, I can't remember already!) And then they took me to the market around the corner where I bought fruit which we then tasted or made into juice. What a fun afternoon!Les mer

  • Pit stop in Đà Nẵng

    17. august 2018, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

My rental contract forced me to do an oil change every thousand kilometres, so I went to the almost neighboring city Đà Nẵng and combined it with little sightseeing. The most interesting feature is the Dragon bridge, which plays an important role in the Tết celebrations (Lunar new year). It was also remarkable that there were countless statues and sculptures along the river promenade.Les mer

  • Hải Vân Quan - turning point

    17. august 2018, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

I already knew I wouldn't be able to go all the way up to North Vietnam, so I decided to make this my turning point and enjoy Hội An and the surrounding area a bit more. Hải Vân Quan, a mountain pass pass which is only about half an hour further from Đà Nẵng, was a fitting place to end the journey to the north and rewarded me with winding roads and spectacular views.Les mer

  • Tuy Hòa - surprise food

    19. august 2018, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

I had to start going back towards Saigon at some point, so today's drive got me as far as Tuy Hòa (~390 km), another beach town. What appealed to me the most there, were the seafood restaurants on a busy road parallel to the beach. Unfortunately, this was one of the places, where almost no one spoke English, and my phone connection was too dodgy to get the menu translated. In the end I just pointed to a reasonably priced item and was surprised with my own table grill and these squids. What a fun experience!Les mer

  • Ride to Đà Lạt

    20. august 2018, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

These 250 km felt like a trip through three different countries. For the first time, I left the lowlands near the coast with its rice fields and crawled up a mountain pass with spectacular views before I reached the highlands around Đà Lạt, which reminded me of Germany with all the pine trees and this distinctive smell of coniferous forest.Les mer

  • Đà Lạt

    21. august 2018, Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

It was significantly colder than what I had experienced so far and everyone (including me) was wearing jackets. The town felt much more European and the architecture seemed partially experimental, which added to its modern impression. A very different sight indeed.Les mer
