Wheeler Peak, Great Basin National Park

    June 19, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

At 10,000 feet in the desert lies an island of conifer forest with streams. What a stark contrast with the vast desolate basin only 5000 feet below. The temperature is about 20 degrees cooler.

We got to our destination pretty late last night, but was able to find a nice camping spot inside the park in their overflow campground. After almost 4 weeks of camping, this was the first night we paid for lodging! The price was only $6. Nevertheless, it felt weird to pay to do the same things we've done for the past 4 weeks: legitimately park somewhere overnight, eat and sleep. The park's four campgrounds fill up fast, especially on the weekends. We got permission to park for free in a private lot across Silver Jack Inn tonight.Read more
