  • Fredericia Cemetery

    July 14, 2022 in Denmark ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Here’s another gorgeous cemetery that looks more like a botanical garden than a burial ground!

It rained during our visit, but Lar found a bench under a towering cedar that kept him dry.

  • Speaking of the Little Mermaid

    July 14, 2022 in Denmark ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Here’s a Little Mermaid replica that we saw in St Thomas, so I knew the original in Copenhagen would be small. What surprised me about her is her legs! The real Little Mermaid has flipper feet, but not the traditional “fish from the waist down” look we see these days. Interesting, eh?Read more

  • Danish Royal Guard?

    July 13, 2022 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

These guys are taking up a whole traffic lane in Copenhagen. (And those uniforms must be mighty hot today!)

  • Ronne

    July 11, 2022 in Denmark ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

We’re hoofing it through the pretty little seaside town of Ronne, Denmark.

  • Ronne Cemetery

    July 11, 2022 in Denmark ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

We found a nice trail to the cemetery in Ronne, Denmark. The burial ground is filled with so much lavender. Smells amazing!

This island is known for its high quality granite, so the granite wall surrounding the burial ground and granite markets throughout makes sense.

One of my favorite monuments is a pyramid with a bird on top. “Fred” means “peace.”

  • Visby Cathedral

    July 10, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

You can’t have a cathedral without a cathedra, but the cherubs beneath the one in Visby’s walled city seem a little beleaguered to me.

  • Ruins & Roses

    July 10, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Visby, Sweden’s nickname is “the city of ruins and roses.” We also saw great big hollyhocks as we strolled the town.

  • Fika

    July 10, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

“Fika” is a Swedish word for a coffee and snack break. This sign seems to be inviting passersby to come down for such refreshments.

  • Wildlife Tunnels

    July 10, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

There’s an extensive bike path on Gotland Island. It has special tunnels beneath it so wildlife, such as foxes, can cross under the road and bike tunnels without being run over.

  • Walled City

    July 10, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

The medieval section of Visby is surrounded by a wall with a perimeter a little over 2 miles long.

  • Mime

    July 9, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Why am I posting this pic? Because a mime is a terrible thing to waste!

  • Gamla Stan

    July 9, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Many alleyways in Stockholm’s old town, aka Gamla Stan, offer intriguing slices to explore.
It’s a lovely place to wander and wonder.

  • Dala Store

    July 9, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

These handpainted Dala horses have become a symbol of Sweden. This shop was making them on-site.

  • Pippi Longstocking

    July 9, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Who else read Pippi Longstocking as a kid? (I even dressed as her for Halloween once. I used a wire coat hanger in my braids to get the look.)

  • Such a green city!

    July 9, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Stockholm’s parks have cranked up the saturation. The word”lush” keeps coming to mind. I still get hits of car exhaust, but overall it smells quite nice here, much better than most cities.

  • Vasa Museum

    July 8, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

In 1628, Sweden’s Vasa warship had such a top heavy design that it sank 20 minutes into its maiden voyage. After it was raised and restored, they built a museum around it. Really fascinating!

The entire ship is covered in intricate carvings including lots and lots of lions. That’s because King Gustav Adolph wanted to fulfill a prophecy about “the lion of the north conquering all.”

Researchers were able to find the names of several who drowned on the ill-fated ship’s maiden voyage, and even did facial reconstructions of them from their skeletal remains.
