  • Fenocchio Gelato - Nice, France

    4 de setembro de 2014, França ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Many say the best gelato in Nice. Some say as good as the best you can find anywhere. Owned by an Italian family. I had dark chocolate -fantastic texture and flavor. Also a type with caramel and another with pine nuts. All great. Definitely coming here again.

Came back for the mango and may try tomato basil next time.

    7 de setembro de 2014, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Waiting for my next train to Milan.

    Pic 1 - train station
Pic 2 - view looking back toward France
Pic 3 - my first meal since arriving in Italia. I was lucky to find a restaurant across the street from the beach with free wifi if eating there. The chance of me getting a sim card in Italy on a sunday is pretty much a not gonna happen.Leia mais

  • Milan, Italia

Just arrived totally refreshed from 4 hour train ride. Unable to stay awake due to vibration and listing of train so slept for most of it.

Pics of Milan train station. Note the Dolce & Gabbana ad hanging in the train station adding such character to this beautiful building....Next stop Naples. Train leaves 11:17pm arrives 9:38am. Then on to Sorrento.Leia mais

  • Sorrento, Italia

    9 de setembro de 2014, Itália ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Pic 1 - Sorrento main square

Pic 2 - On the way to the port to take the hydrofoil to Capri

Pic 3 - Taken from the port looking at the cliff walls of Sorrento. Definitely no problem defending this in times past.

I was hurting yesterday after a long 24 hours across 6 trains including the final train a commuter train from Naples to Sorrento with 32 stops. A third of the way into that final train a trio of musicians got on and wanted to play for everyone very loud music with a variety of instruments and an amplifier. I tried to pay them to stop playing as it was clearly annoying everyone and my head was about to explode. During that I met a very interesting tour guide name Roberto who owns part of a local travel agency known my the hotel where I am staying and will be going to tour the Amalfi Coast with him this week. He told me he no longer needs espresso each morning as he takes the commuter train each morning and the wake him up.

    I am staying at:

    http://ulisse.hotelmobilesite.com

Real nice hotel with a spa attached gym and pool that are separately run but discounted. They have a wing of dorm rooms they call a hostel inside the hotel at discounted rates. I'm in a 2 person dorm and the only one in it. So it's a private hotel room at a dirt cheap price per night of 25 euro in a town that has been a resort town since the time of the Roman Empire. I was fine for 8 nights in 16 person dorm in Nice so this is quite a change.

    Capri next!

  • Leaving Sorrento

    12 de setembro de 2014, Itália ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

On my way out of town and on to Catania, Sicily by way of Naples. I hear that Mount Etna is close by to where I'll be and is 2.5x Vesuvius and its currently erupting. They have tours and I'll be going for sure. More info:

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Etna

Pic 1 - Annoying dingbats in the train playing loud ass instruments for tips.

Pic 2 - Sorrento train station. Sorrento is a great town to get to other places; Capri, Amalfi Coast, etc but really not the place for single travelers. Great food but lack of good beaches in Sorrento. I'll be returning some day but will stay on the Amalfi Coast. They say Positano is the best place to stay.

Pic 3 - Train to Naples. Pretty much anything going in or out of Naples looks like trash. Everyone tells me don't spend time in Naples. I didn't, but we drove all over Naples in a bus going to Pompeii and Vesuvius and I've never seen so much trash in my life. Another Euro wanderer told me they at one point had a strike of trash workers that lasted 3 years. I don't know about that but there was trash everywhere and a quick search brought me this WSJ article that talks about the problem including the Mafioso dumping nuclear waste.

Glad I'll be there for less than an hour to catch the train to Sicily as ive had my max radiation exposure for the month.

Whatever the outcome for Naples between the volcano that will blow and cause mass destruction and their total dysfunction I would have to say they are pretty fucked. They make Mexico look clean and organized. I think I've got maybe 5 more days of southern Europe in me this trip then time to get up to Germany and the other countries up north where they do things on point.

  • On the train - ferry to Sicilia!

    12 de setembro de 2014, Itália ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

There was all this racket on the train and we were stopped for a while my assumption being changing out cars or some kind of delay /mechanical problems. I have learned to accept that in Italy you will be late and they won't tell you what is going on so I just places when I get there. Then all the sudden someone in my cabin was like hey let's go upstairs for food and drinks. I had no idea what they were talking about assuming we were at a train stop. I didn't realize they pulled the entire train in to the bottom of a ferry to get us to Sicily. They had over 20 train cars on the ferry and room for many more. Simply amazing. See pics for details. Have to say it's the first time I have been on a train and a boat at the same time.Leia mais

  • Catania, Sicily

    13 de setembro de 2014, Itália ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Not giving an endorsement for this place as you can see in later posts. I keep reminding myself I'm here to climb Etna. They say what you can see is far more amazing than Vesuvius as it is truly active. I found an all day hike of Etna for tomorrow. I plan to leave on Monday and head north.

Pic 1 - Seriously those are the doors to get into the building where the hostel is located. They are nearly 15ft high and several hundred pounds each. They take some effort to get moving.

Pic 2 - From the dorm window looking past Catania to Mount Etna.

Pic 3 - A theater in one of the piazas.

  • Catania, Sicily

    13 de setembro de 2014, Itália ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

    This city is a disaster.

Pic 1 - Next door to the police station. This is an abandoned building with razor wire... I chose not to take a picture of the police station as given the past "politics" down here I didn't know how that would go over. It looked like a fortress more than local police.

Pic 2 - Looks like a war zone.

Pic 3 - Trash was everywhere but this said it all. A mummified cat. This animal had been there for a while.

Next stop downtown where if I cropped well I could avoid the graffiti.

    Volcano tomorrow then gone.

Okay, so the down town area is a little better. I did however point the camera up to avoid the graffiti.

Pic 1 - Elephants? Did Hannibal invade this place? Anyone? Buehler?

Pic 2 and Pic 3 - Clearly the little money here is spent on churches that I and clearly mostly euro's care nothIng about as well as fountains. Good work guys.

On Monday I'll be headed to Roma and away from the Mexico of Europe. Yes, I really did post a pic of a mummified cat on here previously.
