    Finally on the way

    January 25 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

It takes an hour and a half longer than expected to get out the door but by noon we are finally setting out towards Baja.

We find an adventure along the road which consists of climbing kid peak on the abandoned old road which has turned into a bit of a overgrown single track.

We make it to the ridge from where we could see one of the many observatories that are up there.

The sign by the road said that the road would close at 4:00 p.m. so we actually ran down this climb which took an hour and 5 minutes up 45 down. Only to find out that people were driving up the road at 4:00 p.m. in order to go to the evening program at the observatories and so obviously that road was not being closed, but the workout was great.

  • Mexico entry to Baja

    January 26 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Crossed the border at algodones, and while we expect it a long line at the border it was completely deserted and we drove right through, as a matter of fact it was so early that the FMM paperwork could not get be completed and we had to get a cup of coffee first.

We drove down to San Felipe in about 3 hours and have lunch there. We had a challenge with the power unit that we expected to charge while driving but it was not working. So we found the restaurant that had an outlet that we could hook into and at least get a full charge for the first day. We also got Wi-Fi so I could get an eSIM card going, not that there is much cell service in Baja.

In the afternoon we drove down to Bahia de Los Angeles and set up camp just as it was getting dark right along the sea of Cortez.

We had our first dinner inside the Tune at the table. I have to admit that I get to enjoy my handy work.

  • Bahia de Los Angeles

    January 27 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Sunny coffee and a bike ride in search of a Sandy beach to park for a few nights. Found muddy flats and an overgrown airstrip before a neat deserted spot by the water. Moved camp and setup. Super mellow nap in afternoon.Read more

  • Santa Rosalita

    January 28 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Cold morning, uninspiring for water sports, chose to move on. Drove to the Pacific ocean, tiny town with a long sandy beach and a surf bar serving fish tacos. Classic.

  • San Ignacio & Mulegé

    January 29 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Woke up in a hotel of all places, got a hot shower which was way overdue and charged up the power system battery because it has been cloudy and the truck engine battery charging is still not working. Greeted by a Mexican military truck in the parking lot in the morning. Drove to San Ignacio which is a small town with a nice church and town square laid out in the typical Spanish fashion. Went for a short hike before driving back to the Sea of Cortez. Hard to find a sandy beach to camp on, all of them were paid official camping and crowded. But found a rocky quiet spot with a few other Overlander trucks.Read more

  • Loreto

    February 1 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

A bit of a surprise after packing up, which seems to take longer than it should and much longer in this camper versus a van. The clasp on one of the corners came off while driving. Things are breaking. Later found out that the bike locks are left behind and lost, there is a new scratch on the Toyota, stuck in Loreto on a Sunday and Monday is a national holiday. Nothing is going to get fixed. Mood suffers. The town parties because of the holiday and loud music is played all night long as we picked a terrible spot to camp. I guess one of those days.Read more

  • San Javier

    February 2 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Beautiful drive to San Javier and bike ride in the back valleys. Perfect blue bird day without wind. Great suggestion by Bill, a retired old camper adventurer who knows Baja well.

Back in town get showers, nice day overall and we helped a boy fix his tire. The karma works and we get a tip for a hardware store and they turn out to have everything we need. All of a sudden were back in business and tomorrow we head further south.

Excellent shrimp dinner by moon light.

Drove two hours to get here, crazy road cut into steep rocky walls. Super cool beach on an isthmus. Getting SUPs out, no tail fin but who cares. • La Paz

    February 7 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Saying goodbyes to this wonderful isthmus and we're on our way. Refueling stop at Wal Mart. Found a great apartment to do laundry while going on the town for a nice dinner, where a starting presentation is happening for a race.Read more

Drove down to Migrino for an overnight on the water again. Dinner and sunset, but this time there are moto tours going on. It's not too bad.

  • Las Frailes

    February 12 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Going for the truck oil change, turns out to be a total mess. Nowhere is an oil change place to be found. How do Mexicans get there engine oil changed? Finally find one, much city driving. Made it to Las Frailes. Awesome display of whales along the coast, a long swim and meeting up with Christy and Justin. Hung here for a few days. Lots of time on the water with jumping rays and whale watching. Amy, Judy, Rod and Tom are there and we do happy hour with them. They own homes an hour up the coast at Pescadores.Read more

  • Cabo Palmilla

    February 19 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

A productive morning on the laptop with wifi. Switched hostels for a really nice one which is run by a Belgian lady. I have a bed in a tent!

I rode to the beach on my bike and found a neat rock formation on this cape. The marine life is good and some healthy coral.

Super relaxing time on the beach laying in the sand and the sun resting and reading.

Rode my bike back into town, and found a restaurant called Simaruba, super elegant and a saxophone player provides a nice ambiance.

There is an art walk in town. Back at the hostel I play Gin rummy with the hosts for a very fun evening all in Spanish.

  • La Fortuna

    February 20 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

After a very nice breakfast of blue berry pancakes and a conversation with my hosts I hop on the bicycle and ride 2 hours how long to coast on some really great dirt roads to La fortuna.

Geo runs the sail and surf shop and shows me the new hobie cat of 2025 and it is fantastic. There's one for sale for a couple of grand right here on the beach, of course I'm tempted but I'm not ready yet. I am looking forward to doing the entire Sea of Cortez in a Hobie cat someday.

Pizza party with my hosts and their friends. Playing uno and making pizza, lots of laughter.

  • Marina and MTB

    February 22 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Good old Belgian 'flensjes' for breakfast. I can store my bicycle here for the week and I'm taking the bus instead of taxis.

A good day for some laptop action on the beach, but I simply didn't feel like it so I rode my bike to the marina where I found some mountain bikers and not too far away there was some great riding!

Catching a local bus to the airport and I'll be on my way to meet up with Chuck and Kathy in San Miguel de Allende for a week. Well that got cancelled at the very last minute as I was putting on my shoes due to the unrest with the cartels. New plans in the making!

  • Santiago

I am a bit lost not knowing what to do next but my two tentmates, Anna and Lisa are going to rent a car and go inland to a swimming hole and a hot springs and they ask if I want to go along which I accept.

Great day hanging out with the young German couple as I'm finding out. We stopped for coffee and meet Bill who is a volunteer at a mango Grove and he runs a cafe there. He had been in Baja for 15 years and we have a great conversation.

A quick dip in the hot springs which are fantastic and all natural. This is the kind of place all by itself that would make me come back to Baja.

  • Office day on the Wi-Fi

    February 24 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Trying to take care of a lot of things that are just not working. Actually pretty much everything so far this year has not worked out of the gate. But I keep trying and adjusting and making the best of everything. Sat down in a cafe and got some of my long overdue items done.

Sunset on the beach. 'broke' into a fancy resort to have a peak. Mellow day.
