      Leeds Castle, Kent

      August 13, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We visited Leeds Castle in the afternoon. (FYI this is not the Leeds in West Yorkshire!)

This was very different to other castles we've visited. Although it was first built in early 1100s, it was not presented with the medieval or Gothic feel of other ancient places. The castle was bought by a rich lady (who had inherited from 3 husbands 😯) who used her inheritances to refurbish the castle. She was half American and loved to host parties with wealthy filmstars. The castle is set in the 1930s as she had decorated it.

The inside was OK. You couldn't go to all the areas. It felt more like a stately home than a castle. The best part was the grand piano, which I couldn't resist having a tinkle on. You lose all shame when you haven't had access to one for 3 weeks.

The grounds however were magnificent! Better than Warwick or any of the others. It had a splendid moat, and vast areas of grassy places where you could picnic or have wedding photos, with streams, bridges and waterfalls. There was a little 'village' of barn buildings which were set up as cafes. They had a maze (which we didn't go to) and you could go on a boat trip around the moat and lakes. A gorgeous day! I did lots of walking and my back is a bit sore.

      Leeds Castle

      August 18, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Leeds Castle is a castle in Kent, England, 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Maidstone. It is built on islands in a lake formed by the River Len to the east of the village of Leeds. It is an historic Grade I listed estate.

A castle has existed on the site since 857. In the 13th century, it came into the hands of King Edward I, for whom it became a favourite residence; in the 16th century, Henry VIII used it as a dwelling for his first wife, Catherine of Aragon.

The present castle dates mostly from the early 19th century. Its last private owner, Olive, Lady Baillie, left the castle in trust to open it to the public. It has been open since 1976.

      Castello di Leeds, Kent

      May 4 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

    • Day 18

      Leeds Castle

      August 18, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Off to Leeds Castle for the day.

Looks big enough to have its own Council, the carpark is big enough.

Very cunning, take you money and then have you walk 15mins to the castle. This sorts the crowd out very nicely as old people fall by the wayside, the toddlers all veer off to point at extremely well fed and rather fearless ducks and swans.

Finally got to the castle, walked an additional kilometre to a cafe that Mark though wouldn’t be as crowded (it was closed) then back again.

It has now been decided to just forget about getting a coffee in England. There are ads on the TV explaining what a Flat White is all about (seriously) but the message hasn’t gotten far. As well as trying to get a small cup , it’s a hopeless endeavour.
Their normal cup is a small bucket and people look askance if you try to get something smaller.

Back to the castle. There’s been one on the site since 1078 and its been rebuilt, renovated and “glamourised” at least six times since then. Story is very interesting but that what’s Google is for. Main thing is it sits in the middle of a lake on two islands. Very neat.

Then you walk the kilometre to the Maze and back then back to the carpark. There were the usual groups of English people going on expeditions for lunch with enough picnic gear to assault Everest. Sure we saw a Nepali family in the mix.

They sell it as “The Loveliest Castle in the World” and I’m pretty sure that you could debate it but it’s really very cool.

      Leeds Castle Maze

      August 18, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

One of the attractions at Leeds is the MAZE.

2,400 yew bushes trimmed within an inch of their life to create a maze that is supposed to take 20 mins to complete. You end up in the middle at a Grotto and follow an underground tunnel to exit.

We are not saying how long it took us to get out, let’s just say that we did so and we are not that much older.

The Italian school kids how ran it were using GPS believe.

It’s very, very clever and has undoubtably been the source of many relationship breakups.

Because of Bernadette’s demonstrated superior sense of direction she led the group. Nothing more is being said.
