Day 3 Wilmlsow to Wells Part 2

      30. april, Wales ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We left the centre of Monmouth and meandered through the streets with the large red sandstone building of Monmouth school. We crossed over the Wye (second time) and rolled along beside it into Redbrook. This was a lovely road with wild garlic festooning the road side with a lovely scent. With blue bell woods above them.

We crossed over the Wye (#3) at Bigsweir bridge and rose to appear out of woods and drop into Llandogo. The views were wonderful.

Another rise and fall and we arrived into Tintern for a group photo by the Abbey. All saying we must return to visit. Both support cars passed us here and we started to climb. Although the gradient of 3-5% was ok, the climb wound up the hill for about 3miles. We were grateful to create the hill, drop into Chepstow passed the 3rd racecourse so far and be welcomed at the Two Rivers hotel.

We had a lovely evening meal serenaded by a local saxophonist and an early bed to recover for the final day.

      LEJOG DAY 13

      19. april 2023, Wales ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Wonderful night in pub last night. Quiz night again - and we won £90 and we’re given another £10 for our charities.
Wee lanes by side of M5, where a BMW was close to taking us out at speed. Thankfully Finn wasn’t with us. Then over the Avonmouth bridge. A great greasy spoon - the Scran Van - for a superb egg and mushroom roll - huge! Then heads down and along the industrial estates to the Severn Bridge. Encountered a route change- badly signed - and a wee ‘encounter’. Survived unscathed. Over the Severn Bridge ( at pace for Helen!) and onwards to Chepstow castle. A real milestone for us. Into Wales, briefly.
      259.6miles done.

      Chepstow

      24. oktober 2019, Wales ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

We stayed at a CL near Chepstow just inside the Welsh border. The journey from Walthamstow was very wet, but things brightened up for our arrival.
The site was on a lush grassed field on a farm which was raising beef cattle. We pitched at the top of the field which the farmer advised was on more solid ground.
We walked into Chepstow across fields in the rain. We visited the town a couple of years ago with Kirsty and it seemed to be thriving, however our visit revealed many shops on the high street closed. A large Tesco may have stripped the heart out of the town. As the rain abated we walked back along the Welsh Coast Path to our site - gettimg back just before the rain started again. It rained all night and we needed a tug out of the grass from the very friendly farmer to get off our pitch. Karen drove to Swansea whilst I kept abreast of the Rugby score in Japan. Could be interesting here next week if the Welsh beat the Boks.
